Chapter 9 - THE NEW EMPIRESix months later.

The rain was falling over Chicago once more, hammering against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the top-floor executive suite at Moretti Global Headquarters downtown.
Alina Ford—or rather, Alina Moretti, as the legal registries and corporate boards now quietly acknowledged—stood at the glass boundary, looking out over the sprawling, rain-streaked skyline of the city she now helped govern.
She wore a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit that fit with razor-sharp precision, her hair pulled back into a sleek, authoritative knot, and a simple platinum band gleaming on her left ring finger.
The door behind her opened silently.
Christian walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. He stopped beside her, handing her a cup before following her gaze out toward the flashing neon lights of West Marlow Street far in the distance.
"Belle’s Diner is up for lease," Christian noted quietly, a faint hint of amusement in his tone. "The old owner retired last week. Henderson says the new waitress drops coffee just as often as you used to."
Alina let out a soft, genuine laugh, taking a sip of the bitter, black coffee. "Let her keep it. Some places are meant to stay ordinary so people like us have a place to sit in the corner."
Christian turned, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her close against his chest as he rested his chin gently on her shoulder.
"You never go back to the corner, Alina," he whispered against her ear, his voice low and steady like the hum of the city below. "You own the room now."
Alina smiled, turning her head slightly to press her cheek against his. She looked out at the vast, sprawling empire stretching out beneath them through the rain—a city built on secrets, survival, and power.

She was holding the pen.
