Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The arrival of the social workers turned the grand foyer of the Reed mansion into a legal war zone. Two caseworkers and a police escort entered, caught between the terrifying aura of Malcolm Reed and the icy arrogance of Victoria Vance.

"Mr. Reed, we received an emergency report of an undocumented, unregistered minor residing in unsafe conditions on your property," the lead caseworker, a stern woman named Agent Harris, stated, looking at her tablet.

"She wasn't in unsafe conditions!" Maisie yelled, tears streaming down her face. "I gave her my best cookies! And my softest blanket!"

"Hush, Maisie," Malcolm said gently, placing a hand on his daughter's head. He turned to Agent Harris. "The child, Evelyn Vance, entered my property seeking asylum from an abusive situation. She is currently under my care. Furthermore, she is a blood relative."

"She is the product of an illegal surrogacy fraud and fraud-related identity theft!" Victoria countered sharply. "She belongs with her legal maternal lineage. I have the resources to provide for her immediately. Mr. Reed has no legal claim to her."

Agent Harris looked overwhelmed. "Sir, ma'am... until a family court judge can sort out the paternity and legal guardianship, the standard procedure for an unregistered child in this situation is protective state custody. We have to take her into a foster facility tonight."

"No!" Evie screamed, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony. She lunged forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Malcolm’s leg, burying her face into his expensive suit trousers. "Please, Daddy-man! Don't let them take me back to the dark! I'll be good! I'll sleep in the attic and I won't make a sound!"

The entire room went dead silent. Even the police officer looked away, visibly moved.

Malcolm looked down at the little girl clinging to his leg. Daddy-man. She didn't even know what a father was, but she knew he was safety. He looked at Mrs. Henderson, who was weeping silently. He looked at Maisie, who was gripping Evie’s hand.

He realized what he had to do. It was a move so radical, so shocking, it would risk his entire empire, his reputation, and everything he had built.

"Agent Harris," Malcolm said, his voice dropping to a calm, authoritative absolute. "You cannot take her into state custody. Because as of forty-eight hours ago, Evelyn Vance is officially and legally my adopted daughter."

Victoria gasped, her face contorting in rage. "That's impossible! You didn't even know she existed until last night! The paperwork takes months!"

"For ordinary people, yes," Malcolm said, pulling a leather-bound folder from his jacket—a folder his legal team had frantically prepared and filed via emergency digital courts while he was driving back from the prison. "But when a billionaire with expediting power, absolute proof of maternal lineage, and a signed, uncontested relinquishment of parental rights from the biological father presents a case to a federal judge... things move very quickly."

Julian had signed the papers. Malcolm had made sure of it before leaving the prison—offering Julian a transfer to a minimum-security facility and an anonymous trust fund that would pay out only after he completed his full sentence, on the condition of absolute forfeiture of all parental claims.

Victoria stared at the documents, her hands shaking. "You... you bought my brother's compliance. You bought the system!"

"I protected my family," Malcolm corrected coldly. "Agent Harris, check the registry. The emergency temporary adoption order was signed by Judge Carter at 4:30 PM today. Evelyn Vance is legally Evelyn Reed. She stays here."

Agent Harris reviewed the digital documents on her tablet, her expression shifting from skepticism to profound relief. "Everything is in order, Mr. Reed. The state has no grounds to intervene. Good evening."

As the social workers and police escorted a furious, screaming Victoria Vance off the property, Malcolm knelt down on the polished oak floor. For the first time in over two years, the heavy, suffocating armor around his heart cracked open completely.

He pulled both Maisie and Evie into his arms, holding them tight as the grand foyer finally filled with the sound of healing, tearful laughter.
