Chapter 6 - A New Dawn at Riverside Heights

Six months later.
The morning alarm clock did not ring at 5:30 AM. Malcolm had long since thrown it into the trash.
Instead, he woke up to the sound of bright, chaotic laughter echoing from the garden below. He walked over to the grand master suite windows, pushing back the heavy velvet curtains to let the morning sun flood the room.
Down in the massive garden—the same garden that used to be too large, too quiet, and too perfectly manicured—a chaotic scene was unfolding. Mrs. Henderson was sitting on a lawn chair, drinking tea and smiling.
And out on the grass, two little girls were chasing a new golden retriever puppy. Maisie was wearing her favorite mismatched socks, her curly hair flying wildly. Running right beside her, laughing with a loud, joyful sound that reached all the way up to the third floor, was Evie. Her cheeks were rosy, her amber eyes bright with life, the shadows of the attic and the trailer completely washed away by love, security, and a father who finally chose to be present.
Malcolm smiled, a genuine, deep smile that reached his eyes. He didn't wear a dark gray suit today. He wore a simple t-shirt and jeans.
He walked out of his room, down the grand staircase, and out into the morning air.
"Daddy!" Maisie shouted, running over and tackling his legs.
"Daddy!" Evie echoed, running right behind her sister, throwing her arms around him with total, uninhibited trust.
Malcolm scooped them both up in his arms, spinning them around as the puppy barked happily around his boots. He looked up at the sky, feeling Sarah’s presence in the warm breeze, knowing that the house with the white columns was no longer hollow. It wasn't a showpiece for the street anymore.
