Chapter 1 - THE REVELATION AT THE TABLE

The silence in the dining room hung heavy enough to crush a man.
Phillip’s face had drained of all color, his skin taking on the sickly grey tone of milk left out in the summer heat. His hands trembled as they rested beside his napkin. Melinda, however, merely crossed her arms, rolling her eyes with a quiet, patronizing sigh.
"Oh, what is it now, Adelaide?" Melinda asked, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Did you write down a new list of kitchen rules? Because if this is about the storage room, we already discussed—"
"Open it, Phillip," Adelaide said softly. Her voice didn't shake. It had the calm, precise authority of an ER nurse calling out dosages during a cardiac arrest.
Phillip reached for the sealed white envelope. His fingers fumbled with the edge before he tore it open. Inside were three folded documents.
As Phillip scanned the first page, his mouth fell open. His eyes darted wildly across the lines of text, reading the header again and again.
"Mom... what is this?" Phillip stammered, his voice breaking. "A... an eviction notice? A notice to vacate?"
Melinda snatched the papers directly out of her husband's hands. "What? Don't be ridiculous! She can't evict us! This is Phillip’s home!"
"This is my home," Adelaide corrected gently, placing her frail-looking hands flat on the polished mahogany table—the same table she and George had polished together thirty years ago. "The mortgage was paid off three months ago. The title is entirely in my name. And as of 9:00 AM this morning, this property no longer belongs to me."
Melinda let out a harsh, shrill laugh. "What are you talking about, you crazy old woman? You sold the apartment? Where are we supposed to go?"
"You have thirty days to find out," Adelaide replied. She stood up, her posture remarkably straight, her back unbent by the weight of the years she had carried them all. "I sold the apartment to an investment firm. The closing was finalized yesterday. The funds have already been transferred."
Phillip grabbed her wrist, panic flashing in his eyes. "Mom, please! Twelve thousand dollars... I lost everything! I was going to fix it, I swear! If we get kicked out, we have nowhere to go! We're broke!"
Adelaide looked down at his hand on her wrist. Slowly, deliberately, Phillip let go under her unyielding gaze.
"I know about the twelve thousand, Phillip," Adelaide said softly, turning her gaze toward Melinda. "I know about the sports betting. I know about the fake overtime. And I know about the 'old burden' who was supposed to sleep in the storage room."
Melinda’s face paled for a split second before hardening into pure venom. "You listened to my private conversation? You wretched, miserable old witch!"
"I did," Adelaide agreed, offering that same small, calm smile she had given at the sink. "And you were right, Melinda. You won't have to put up with me anymore. Because tomorrow morning, I’m packing one suitcase and leaving for a long vacation. When I come back, someone else will be living here. I suggest you start packing."
Without another word, Adelaide turned and walked into her bedroom, locking the door behind her.
Outside, the screaming match began. Phillip and Melinda's voices tore through the quiet apartment, accusations and desperate frantic math clashing in the dark. But inside her room, Adelaide sat on the edge of her bed, unbuttoned her cardigan, and breathed in the purest air she had inhaled in three years.

She thought it was over. She thought she had drawn the final line.
She had no idea that Melinda was already planning a counterstrike that would drag Adelaide into the fight of her life.
