Chapter 2 - THE SNAKE IN THE GRASS

The next morning, Adelaide woke up early, feeling a strange lightness in her chest. She packed a single leather suitcase with her best clothes, her late husband’s watch, and her medical documents.

When she stepped into the hallway, the apartment was eerily quiet.

Phillip was sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the wall, his eyes bloodshot. Melinda was nowhere to be seen.

"Mom," Phillip croaked, standing up awkwardly. "Please. Talk to me. Melinda went to see a lawyer. She says... she says what you did isn't legal. You can't just kick family out onto the street."

Adelaide looked at her son—the boy she had raised, educated, and shielded from the harsh realities of the world. "Phillip, I didn't kick you out. You kicked yourself out the moment you let your wife treat me like a servant in my own home, while you gambled away your family's future."

Before Phillip could answer, the front door burst open. Melinda walked in, accompanied by two men in dark suits.

"There she is," Melinda declared, pointing a sharp, manicured finger at Adelaide. "Officer, that's her. That's the woman who is mentally unfit and endangering my children."

Adelaide frowned, stepping back. "Excuse me?"

One of the men, a tall officer with a badge on his belt, stepped forward calmly. "Ma'am, we received a call regarding an elderly resident suffering from severe cognitive decline and emotional instability. Your daughter-in-law claims you recently sold your primary asset under delusion and are threatening self-harm and eviction of minor dependents."

Adelaide’s ER training instantly kicked in. Her pulse surged, but her face remained an unreadable mask. "Officer, I am sixty-five years old, a retired emergency room nurse from Hayward Memorial. I am fully coherent, lucid, and in possession of my legal faculties. This is a domestic dispute regarding property ownership."

Melinda burst into fake tears, clutching Phillip’s arm. "Officer, look at her! She’s been talking to herself for weeks! She sold our home for pennies to a predatory scam company because she thought 'voices' told her to! She’s taking medication—we found pills in her room!"

"Those are blood pressure medications, you deceitful girl," Adelaide said, her voice dropping an octave, sharp as a scalpel.

"We need to conduct an emergency psychiatric evaluation," the second man, a social worker, said gently. "Mrs. Hayward, if you could just come with us to the county medical center for 72 hours—"

"No," Phillip suddenly blurted out.

Melinda glared at him furiously. "Phillip, shut up!"

"No, Melinda!" Phillip yelled, his voice cracking. "She’s my mother! She’s not crazy! You’re lying!"

"She's throwing us on the street, Phillip!" Melinda screamed, dropping the tearful act instantly. "She sold the roof over your children's heads! If she goes to an institution, a judge can declare the property sale fraudulent due to incompetence! We get the apartment back! Don't you get it, you idiot?!"

The room went dead silent.

The police officer turned his gaze slowly toward Melinda. The social worker lowered his clipboard.

Melinda realized what she had just confessed in front of two state officials. Her mouth snapped shut, her cheeks flushing a deep, ugly red.

Adelaide looked at the police officer. "Officer, I believe you have all the information you need regarding who is mentally stable in this room."

The officer cleared his throat, looking at Melinda with cold disgust. "Ma'am, making a false report to law enforcement is a federal offense. If you call us again under these pretenses, you will be placed in handcuffs."

As the officers left, Adelaide picked up her suitcase. She walked past Melinda, stopping just inches from her ear.

"You tried to put me in a cage," Adelaide whispered, her eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying light. "Now watch what happens when the cage breaks."
