Chapter 2 - THE SECRET OF THE SILVER STARS

The study of Dominic Moretti was a room constructed of dark mahogany, leather, and the heavy scent of expensive tobacco. It was a room where fortunes were made and lives were ended with a single stroke of a pen.

Ellie stood in the center of the room, feeling incredibly small. Behind her stood her mother, Sarah Harper, a pale woman with hands worn rough by years of hard labor. Sarah was weeping silently, her hands resting on Ellie’s shoulders, terrified that her daughter’s outspokenness had just signed their death warrants.

"Mr. Moretti, please," Sarah begged, her voice cracking. "Ellie is just a child. She didn't mean any harm. She has an overactive imagination. We will leave tonight. We will never speak of this again, I swear to you on my life!"

Dominic sat behind his massive desk. He had discarded his suit jacket, and his white shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing thick, scarred forearms. He held the burned napkin in his hands, tracing the stitched silver stars with his thumb.

"Your daughter just saved my children from being poisoned under my own roof, Sarah," Dominic said, his voice quiet but carrying an immense weight. "Do you think I am a monster who punishes those who protect his blood?"

Sarah swallowed hard, her tears freezing on her cheeks. "No, sir."

"Tell me, Ellie," Dominic said, leaning forward. "How did you know these stars belonged to Rosalie?"

Ellie took a step forward, gently pulling away from her mother’s protective grip. "Because of the library, sir. Sometimes, when my mama is working late, I hide in the library to read. There is a photo album on the bottom shelf. It has pictures of Mrs. Rosalie when she was young. In one of the pictures, she is holding a baby blanket. It has these exact same silver stars stitched into the corner. Three of them. One for Mateo, one for Enzo, and one for Lucia."

Dominic’s chest rose and fell in a slow, heavy breath. He remembered that blanket. Rosalie had spent hours stitching it while she was pregnant, her fingers moving tirelessly despite her swollen joints.

"And the burn?" Dominic asked, pointing to the blackened, charred corner of the napkin.

"It smells like oil from the furnace room," Ellie explained. "Someone tried to burn it. But the furnace in the basement has a faulty draft. If you throw something light like a napkin in, sometimes the wind blows it right back out into the ash trap. That's where I found it. It was caught in the grate, half-charred."

Dominic’s eyes darkened to a shade that made Sarah gasp and pull Ellie back. It was the look of a predator realizing it had been sleeping in the same den as its prey.

"Vivian," Dominic muttered to himself.

"Mr. Moretti," Ellie said, her voice barely a whisper. "There is one more thing."

"Speak."

"When I was cleaning the laundry chute yesterday, I found a small silver key. It was caught in the lint trap. It has the same three stars engraved on the head. I didn't know what it went to... until I saw the locked drawer in the children's playroom. The one Vivian told them never to touch because it contained 'bad memories'."

Dominic stood up. The sheer physical presence of the man filled the room with an undeniable aura of power.

"Sarah," Dominic ordered. "Take your daughter to the guest quarters on the third floor. You are no longer kitchen or laundry staff. You are under my personal protection. If anyone—including Vivian Lock—so much as looks at either of you, my men will put a bullet through their skull. Understood?"

Sarah nodded rapidly, clutching Ellie to her chest. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. Thank you."

As they were escorted out by a guard, Dominic picked up his desk phone. He dialed a single-digit number.

"Bring me the master keys to the playroom," Dominic commanded. "And bring Vivian Lock to my study. Now."
