Mason and Ava looked up at me, completely unbothered by the dramatic exit. "Can we have dessert now?" Mason asked innocently.
Lily giggled softly, breaking the tension.
I smiled down at them, feeling a profound sense of lightness wash over me. The invisible backpack of anxiety, judgment, and hidden stress I had carried for three years had finally been lifted off my shoulders.
Thomas looked around the remaining family members, who sat in stunned silence. "If you'll excuse us, Rachel and I have business to attend to at the hospital board meeting, and then I’m taking my children home for dinner."
"Of course, Tom," Walter said quietly, his voice heavy with humility. He looked at me, his eyes unscrewed and glistening with unshed tears. "Rachel... I don't know how to apologize. Words aren't enough."
"Then don't say them, Walter," I replied, grabbing my small leather purse from the back of my chair. "Just start being honest with yourself and the people around you."
As Thomas, his three children, and I walked out of the Mercer house and into the crisp Ohio snow, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text message from an unknown number—or rather, a number I had blocked three times before.
Daniel: Open the gate. We need to talk. Don't embarrass me further.

I stared at the screen, a faint, cold smile touching the corners of my lips. Without a second thought, I blocked the number permanently, slid the phone back into my pocket, and got into the passenger seat of Thomas’s sleek black SUV.
Little did Daniel know, his public humiliation at the dinner table was only the opening act. The real reckoning was waiting for him back at his empty apartment.
