Chapter 4 - THE COUNTER-ATTACKLinda and Madison were not women who went down without a fight. Narcissism does not yield easily to reality.

On Thursday morning, two days before the scheduled wedding, my mother launched a desperate counter-offensive. She hired a sleazy, high-profile defense attorney named Richard Sterling, known for defending disgraced country club elites.

Sterling held a press conference on the steps of the Dallas County Courthouse.

“My clients, Linda and Madison, are the victims of a calculated character assassination,” Sterling announced to the gathered media. “Harper has long suffered from severe psychological distress and histrionic tendencies. The funds in question were part of a family trust intended for major life milestones. Madison’s wedding was a legitimate use of those funds. Harper’s sudden medical emergency was opportunistically used to humiliate her family.”

Sitting in my hospital bed, watching the press conference, my blood boiled.

“They’re flipping the narrative,” Detective Vance said, stepping into my room alongside Julian. “They are claiming the joint account was legally Linda’s to distribute, and that you gave verbal consent six months ago.”

“I have the bank records!” I protested, trying to sit up despite the searing pain in my abdomen. “I funded that account entirely with my salary from my years working as an offshore logistics manager! Every single deposit came from my paycheck!”

“We know,” Julian said calmly. “And we are about to play our trump card.”

Julian opened a laptop and pulled up a digital file.

“Two weeks before your collapse, when you first noticed money missing from the account, you recorded a phone conversation with your mother, correct?”

I remembered. Dallas was in Texas, a single-party consent state for audio recordings. I had recorded the call because I couldn't believe what she was saying at the time.

Julian pressed play.

My mother’s voice rang clear and unedited through the room:

“Harper, stop crying about the $150,000! You’re almost thirty, you don’t have a husband, you don’t have a family. Madison is the one giving me grandchildren. She deserves a dream wedding! What do you even need that money for anyway? Another stupid medical checkup? You’re fine! You’re always making up illnesses for attention! I took the money, and I gave it to the wedding planner. You’ll get it back when I sell the house in five years. Don't you dare mention this to Ethan or anyone else, or I will disown you!”

Julian looked up from the screen with a razor-sharp smile.

“We are releasing this audio to the district attorney and the press in one hour,” Julian said. “Let’s see Mr. Sterling defend that.”
