Chapter 5 - THE ARRESTBy Friday morning, the audio recording had gone completely viral. It was played on national morning shows, radio broadcasts, and shared millions of times across TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

The public outrage was overwhelming. The narrative Linda had tried to build dissolved in seconds. The public called for immediate justice.

At 11:00 AM, Detective Vance and three uniformed Dallas police officers arrived at Linda’s home in suburban Dallas.

A swarm of news cameras was already parked on the sidewalk when the police cruisers pulled up with their lights flashing.

Linda opened the front door, wearing a silk robe, holding a glass of wine. When she saw the handcuffs in Detective Vance’s hand, her face turned pale as chalk.

“Linda,” Detective Vance said clearly so the news microphones could capture every word. “You are under arrest for Grand Larceny over $100,000, Wire Fraud, and Exploitation of a Dependent Adult. You have the right to remain silent...”

“What?! No! Get your hands off me!” Linda shrieked as the officers turned her around and pulled her arms behind her back. “Madison! Madison, call Sterling!”

Madison ran out to the porch, hysterically screaming. “You can’t do this! It’s my wedding weekend! You’re ruining my life!”

“Madison,” Detective Vance called out, turning to look at her. “Don’t go anywhere. You are being served with a subpoena to appear before a grand jury as an accessory to grand theft and tax fraud related to those unrecorded vendor payments.”

The video of Linda being placed in the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs was broadcast live across Texas.

In my hospital room, Dr. Hayes walked in with a tray of medication. He looked at the TV screen, then at me.

“How are you feeling, Harper?” he asked gently.

For the first time in weeks, the crushing weight in my chest felt a little lighter.
