Six months after the trial, the air in Washington, D.C. was crisp and filled with the promise of autumn.

The Pentagon’s main auditorium was filled with hundreds of dignitaries, high-ranking military leaders, and executives from the defense sector. The atmosphere was light, elegant, and filled with genuine honor—a stark contrast to the fake, toxic elegance of the Fort Belvoir gala.

I stood on the grand stage, the bright lights reflecting off the polished brass buttons of my uniform.

General Alan Mercer stood beside me, a wide, genuine smile on his face. He held a velvet box containing a new set of insignia.
