Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF SECRETS

The silence in the grand ballroom was heavier than the gold chandeliers hanging overhead. A moment ago, the room was filled with cruel, aristocratic laughter; now, even the rustle of silk was gone.
Mara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her skin burned where the golden phoenix mark shone bright beneath her wet collarbone. She had spent her entire life in the palace shadows—cleaning soot from hearths, scrubbing marble floors, and learning to keep her eyes lowered so the nobles would forget she existed. She was Mara the orphan, the invisible servant girl in the thin brown dress.
Now, King Arthur—the man whose boots she had polished for years—was kneeling on the wet floor before her.
His aged face was pale, lined with a lifetime of unanswered grief. His hands trembled as he reached toward her face, his thumb hovering just millimeters above the tiny crescent-shaped scar at her temple.
“My child...” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with an agonizing mixture of sorrow and hope. “The phoenix mark of the Sun Royal line... and the mark of the fire...”
Mara backed away, her bare feet slipping slightly on the scattered ice cubes. “Your Majesty, please—I am just a servant. I don't know why my skin is doing this!”
“It is glowing because the magic in your blood reacts to cold and water,” Arthur said, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. “The day you were born, the priest blessed you with the Eternal Flame. We thought the fire destroyed you, but the mark was only sleeping...”
At the edge of the dais, Lady Celeste’s face turned from pale to venomous white. Her silver tiara caught the light, but all the radiance had left her eyes. She gripped her satin dress so tightly the seams groaned.
No. This cannot be happening, Celeste thought, her mind spiraling into blind panic. Seventeen years of playing the perfect heir! Seventeen years of bowing to this dying old man! I will not lose the throne to a kitchen rat!
Celeste took a step forward, her voice dripping with fake outrage. “Uncle! Do not let grief cloud your royal judgment! This girl is an impostor! A street magician using cheap alchemy to fool a heartbroken father!”
Arthur snapped his head toward Celeste, his eyes flaring with an authority no one had seen in seventeen years. “Silence, Celeste!”
“I will not be silent!” Celeste snarled, dropping her delicate persona. “The royal baby died in the blaze! Lord Vane himself brought us the charred remains!”
At the sound of that name—Lord Vane—a collective gasp echoed through the crowd. Lord Vane was the King’s younger brother, Celeste’s father, and the Commander of the Royal Guard. He stepped out from the shadowy perimeter of the room, his dark iron armor clanking with every heavy step.
Lord Vane’s face was an unreadable mask of stone, but his right hand rested heavily on the hilt of his broadsword.
“My King,” Vane said, his deep voice cutting through the room like a blade. “My daughter speaks the truth. We mourned Princess Aurelia seventeen years ago. This girl is a peasant attempting treason by impersonating the royal bloodline.”
“Look at her temple, brother!” Arthur shouted, standing up and towering over Mara protectively. “Look at the crescent scar! Look at the mark glowing on her skin! No alchemy can forge the Royal Phoenix!”
Mara looked between the King, who was staring at her with desperate love, and Lord Vane, whose eyes promised cold, violent death. She realized with a terrifying jolt that her life had been safer when she was just a humiliated servant. Being a princess was a death sentence.
Lord Vane drew his sword half an inch from its scabbard. “Guards! Seize this girl for treason and deception! Put her in the iron dungeon until she confesses who sent her!”
“Touch her and you die by my blade!” King Arthur roared, drawing his own golden rapier.
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Noblewomen screamed, dropping their wine glasses; lords scrambled for the exits.
Mara turned to run, but Celeste lunged forward, her silver-clad fingers clawing at Mara’s wet hair. Celeste leaned in close to Mara’s ear, her voice dropping to a terrifying, venomous whisper that sent chills deeper than the ice water.
“You should have died in the cradle, little cousin,” Celeste hissed. “My father didn't set that fire seventeen years ago just for you to crawl back out of the gutter today.”
Mara’s breath hitched. They set the fire.
Before Mara could process the horror, Celeste shoved her hard toward Lord Vane’s advancing guards. But just as an iron-clad guard reached for Mara's arm, a blinding flash of golden fire erupted from the phoenix mark on her collarbone, throwing the guards backward into the crowd!
