Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF SILK AND STEEL

The city of Solaria was in total chaos. Screams echoed through the cobblestone streets as dark shadows—monstrous, shifting wraiths born from black magic—poured over the outer walls, tearing down banners and setting fire to the wooden homes of the common folk.
Inside the palace, Mara stood at the war table, looking over the map of the city. Standing beside her was King Arthur and, to Mara’s shock, Captain Kael—who was pale and bandaged, but alive. The golden vial Mara had consumed had released enough ambient magic to heal his fatal wound just in time.
“The city guards are retreating to the inner courtyard,” Kael said, pointing at the map with a blood-stained finger. “Celeste’s dark army numbers over five thousand shadow-wraiths. Our men are terrified. Normal steel passes right through these monsters!”
“Normal steel does, yes,” Mara said, her voice calm and absolute. “But fire doesn't.”
King Arthur looked at his daughter with a mix of pride and fear. “Aurelia, you used too much magic in the tower. Look at your hands—the dark veins are spreading. If you use the Black Sun Fire again, it might destroy your soul!”
Mara looked down at her hands. Dark, vein-like patterns traced up her wrists, pulsing with cold energy. Her mother’s dark curse was slowly taking over her body every time she called upon her power.
“If I do nothing, this city dies tonight,” Mara said firmly. “I spent seventeen years watching these people suffer from the shadows. I won't hide while they burn.”
Mara walked out onto the grand palace balcony, overlooking the inner courtyard where three hundred remaining royal guards were preparing for a hopeless final stand. They were terrified, shaking in their armor as the massive oak gates groaned under the pounding of the shadow army outside.
Mara stepped up to the stone railing. She raised her right hand high into the night air.
“Guards of Solaria!” Mara’s voice rang out like a silver bell, reaching every corner of the courtyard.
The soldiers looked up, astonished to see the thin servant girl standing beside the King, framed by a halo of pure golden light.
“I am Aurelia! Daughter of King Arthur!” she declared. “Tonight, the traitors told you that hope is dead! They told you that darkness has won! But I tell you this: as long as I draw breath, the sun will NEVER set on this kingdom!”
Mara slammed her burning palm onto the stone balcony floor.
FWOSH!
A wave of golden fire coursed down the palace walls, sweeping across the weapons of every single soldier in the courtyard. The swords, spears, and arrows of the royal guards burst into bright, everlasting flames that did not burn their hands!
The soldiers gasped in awe, looking at their glowing, enchanted weapons. Morale shifted in an instant. Fear turned into roaring fury.
“FOR THE PRINCESS! FOR SOLARIA!” the captain of the guard roared, raising his flaming sword.
“FOR SOLARIA!” three hundred voices thundered back.
The massive oak gates shattered inward! A wave of black shadow-wraiths surged into the courtyard, howling with terrifying, unnatural shrieks!
“CHARGE!” Mara screamed.
The royal guards slammed into the shadow army. Flaming swords sliced through the darkness, turning the wraiths into harmless puffs of smoke. The courtyard became a chaotic sea of fire and shadow.
Mara didn't stay on the balcony. She leapt down thirty feet, landing gracefully in the center of the battlefield, her hands swirling with golden fire as she blasted path after path through the enemy lines.
She fought her way toward the main gates, where Celeste sat atop an armored dark horse, watching the battle with a cold, cruel smile.
“Celeste!” Mara shouted, blasting two wraiths into dust. “Face me!”
Celeste looked down at Mara, her silver tiara gleaming in the firelight. But instead of drawing a sword, Celeste pulled a strange, ancient iron box from her saddlebag.
“You’re too late, little cousin,” Celeste sneered. “You think this shadow army was meant to conquer the city? It was just a distraction to give me time to open your mother’s vault!”
Celeste opened the box. Inside lay a glowing, pulsating dark red heart—the physical core of Queen Eleanor’s dark magic.
