Chapter 6 - SHADOWS IN THE WALLSThe maintenance shaft was pitch black, cramped, and smelled heavily of decades-old dust and rusted iron. Ethan crawled on his hands and knees through the narrow metal tunnel, wincing as the sharp edges of the corrugated steel scraped against his bruised shoulder. Every breath burned his lungs, but adrenaline kept him moving forward with terrifying focus.

Below him, through the rusted iron grates embedded in the ceiling of the old service corridor, he could hear the frantic sounds of footsteps and angry voices echoing off the brick walls.
"...I told you we should have taken the front gates!" Celeste's voice hissed sharply. "That brat has been slowing us down from the very beginning!"
"Shut your mouth, Celeste, or I'll leave you behind with him!" Richard snapped back.
Ethan peered down through a rusted floor grate. They were standing in the subterranean junction beneath the old carriage house. Richard still had his arm wrapped tightly around Sophie’s waist, the heavy revolver clutched in his right hand. Celeste was frantically punching a security code into the mechanical keypad that operated the heavy iron bulkhead door leading directly out to the coastal cliffs behind the estate.
Sophie looked exhausted, pale, and terrified, but her small hands were still stubbornly clutching her late mother's photograph against her chest like a shield.
"Hurry up with the code!" Richard urged, his eyes darting anxiously back toward the hallway leading from the main mansion. "He's going to figure out our route any second now!"
BEEP. SYSTEM ERROR.
"Damn it!" Celeste cursed, slamming her fist against the metal keypad. "The master override lockout must have triggered when you fired that shot upstairs! The bulkhead is sealed from the main security console!"
Ethan crept silently forward along the ventilation shaft until he was positioned directly above them. His fingers brushed against the metal grate beneath him. With extreme caution, he gripped the edges of the rusty wire mesh and began to slowly, silently pull it free from its rotting wooden frame.
Clack. A tiny flake of rust drifted downward, landing softly on Celeste’s silk blouse.
Celeste paused, looking up toward the ceiling with a frown of irritation. "What was—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Ethan ripped the heavy metal grate completely out of the ceiling and dropped straight down like a stone, landing squarely on top of Richard with bone-crushing force.
The impact knocked the wind out of Richard instantly. The heavy revolver flew from his hand, clattering loudly against the concrete floor and sliding across the room out of reach.
"Daddy!" Sophie screamed in pure relief, dropping her arms and running toward him.
Ethan caught her in a single, sweeping motion, pulling her behind his back away from the chaos. "Are you okay, baby? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay, Daddy! I'm okay!" she cried, burying her face in his shoulder.
On the floor beneath him, Richard thrashed wildly, trying to buck Ethan off, but Ethan drove his fist downward with the full weight of his rage behind it, landing a devastating blow to Richard’s jaw that instantly knocked him unconscious.
Celeste stumbled backward against the iron bulkhead door, her eyes widening in pure horror as she realized she was entirely trapped. There was no escape route left, no offshore account to rescue her, and no more lies left to tell.

Ethan slowly stood up, handing Sophie over to the safety of a nearby alcove. He turned to face Celeste, his eyes burning with an icy, merciless fury.
"It's over, Celeste," Ethan said, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "You ran out of code."
