Chapter 2 - SHADOWS IN THE ICUThe smell of bleach and antiseptic hit me as soon as I walked into the intensive care unit. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitors was the only sound in room 304. I stood at the doorway, my military duffel bag slung over my shoulder, feeling weaker than I ever had in the middle of a firefight.

Claire lay in the bed, wrapped in layers of warmed blankets. IV lines snaked into her arms, and an oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose. Her lips, which had been blue hours ago, were finally returning to a faint pink, but her skin was still ghostly pale. In a small clear bassinet beside her lay Lily, hooked up to miniature monitors measuring her core temperature.
"Sergeant Miller?" A doctor stepped up beside me, holding a digital clipboard.
"How are they, Doc?" My voice was barely a rascal whisper.
"Your wife suffered severe hypothermia and early-stage frostbite on her fingers and toes," the doctor said gravely. "If you had arrived fifteen minutes later... her organs would have begun shutting down permanently. As for your daughter, the coat and your wife's body heat saved her life, but her body temperature dropped to ninety-one degrees. We're monitoring them both for pulmonary complications."
I sat down in the plastic chair beside Claire's bed and took her ice-cold hand in mine. "I'm so sorry," I murmured, pressing my forehead against her knuckles. "I should have come home sooner."
Claire’s eyelashes fluttered. She slowly turned her head, her brown eyes cloudy with exhaustion and drugs. "Daniel..."
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here. You're safe. Lily is safe."
A tear slipped from the corner of her eye. "They took everything... Daniel... your father brought men to our apartment two weeks ago. They served us an eviction notice... said the lease was in his name and he revoked it. He said if I tried to contact you, he’d use his influence to have you court-martialed for treason..."
Anger burned through my veins like liquid fire. "He lied to you, Claire. He has no power. He’s in handcuffs right now."
Claire gripped my fingers with surprising strength. "It wasn't just money, Daniel. Your father... he was looking for something in your study before he locked us out. A hard drive. He kept asking where you hid the 'Blackstone Ledger'."
I froze. The Blackstone Ledger.
During my last three months in Syria, my unit intercepted a series of encrypted satellite transmissions originating from a private contractor tied to defense logistics. When I ran the digital signatures through my intelligence contacts, the paper trail didn't lead to foreign terrorists—it led directly to a dummy corporation owned by Richard Miller. He wasn't just stealing my money. My father was laundering money for international arms brokers through government contracts.
"Did he find it?" I asked, my blood running cold.
"No," Claire whispered, her voice fading as the sedatives took hold again. "I took it... before they threw us out... I hid it..."
"Where, Claire? Where is it?"
"In Lily's... stuffed bear..." she murmured before slipping back into sleep.
I turned slowly to the bassinet. Resting at the foot of the small plastic crib was a well-worn plush bear. I reached in, picked it up, and felt along the seams. Tucked deep inside the synthetic stuffing was a micro-SD card wrapped in protective tape.
Suddenly, the lights in the hallway flickered and died.
Emergency backup generators kicked on with a low hum, casting long, eerie shadows across the room. Outside the door, the muffled sound of heavy footsteps approached. I stood up instantly, sliding the micro-SD card into my pocket and reaching reflexively for a weapon that wasn't at my hip.
The door to room 304 clicked open.

A tall man in a tailored dark suit stepped inside. He didn't look like a cop. He had the sharp, military posture of a contractor, and his hand was buried inside his heavy coat.
"Sergeant Miller," the man said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Hand over the drive, and we leave the girls out of this."
