Chapter 8 - THE FINAL REVELATIONThat evening, after putting Lily to bed, I sat in my new study, looking through the final legal documents sent by our family attorney. Everything was officially settled. The stolen accounts were restored, the court orders were finalized, and our lives were entirely our own.

My phone rang. It was an unlisted number.

I answered it. "Hello?"

"Daniel..."

The voice was faint, raspy, and breaking through heavy static. It was my father, calling from the federal holding facility.

"I don't have anything to say to you, Richard," I said, moving to hang up.

"Wait! Don't hang up!" he begged, his voice trembling. "There's... there's something you need to know. Something I couldn't tell Vance... something I couldn't say in court."

I paused, holding the phone to my ear. "You have thirty seconds."

"The ledger... the money... it wasn't just about greed, Daniel," Richard stammered, coughing violently. "Ten years ago... before you joined the military... your mother and I made a deal with Vance to cover up a massive structural failure in one of his government building projects. People died, Daniel. If that got out, we were going to prison forever."

"I know," I said coldly. "I saw the hidden files on the micro-SD card."

"No... you don't understand!" Richard panicked. "Vance wasn't the head of it! He was working for someone higher up! Someone in the Pentagon! The money we took from you... we were trying to pay off the blackmail! We threw Claire out because we knew Vance’s men were watching the house! We thought if they saw us treat her like an outsider, they wouldn't target her!"

I let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Is that the story you're telling yourself so you can sleep in your cell at night, Dad? You threw her into a snowstorm to save your own skin."

"Daniel, listen to me!" Richard screamed over the line. "The man behind Vance... he found out you have the master encryption key! The trial was a distraction! He knows where you bought that house!"

Click.

The phone line went dead.

A sudden chill swept through the warm study.

I stood up slowly and walked over to the window looking out over the dark, quiet driveway. The moon was high, casting long shadows across the green lawn.

And then, down at the edge of the tree line, fifty yards away...

A single pair of headlights flickered on in the darkness.

I turned away from the window, walked over to my desk, unlocked the bottom drawer, and pulled out my military-issue sidearm. I loaded a fresh magazine, racking the slide with a crisp, lethal snap.

They thought they were coming to finish what my parents started.

They thought I was just a retired soldier hiding in the countryside.

I walked out to the porch, stepping into the cool night air, clutching the weapon behind my back as the unfamiliar car slowly rolled up my driveway.

Let them come, I thought, a cold smile touching my lips. This time, I'm not defending. I'm hunting.

THE END... FOR NOW.
