Chapter 5 - The Price of LoyaltyThe air in the grand hall was thick with cordite and the metallic tang of fresh blood. Three of Viktor’s men lay groaning on the Persian rug, neutralized by my initial counter-attack, but the sound of heavy boots stomping down the curved mahogany staircase signaled reinforcements arriving from the second-floor armory.

I pressed my back against the cold stone pillar, reloading my Sig Sauer with practiced, mechanical precision. My mind was completely clear, stripped of all emotion except for a cold, beautiful clarity. For thirty-four years, I had believed that affection was a weakness and loyalty was just a commodity with a price tag. But as I thought of little Sofia pressing that blanket against my chest and whispering about her father being cold, I realized something profound: I didn't care about dying anymore. What I cared about was making sure the world knew that Daniel Hale wasn't just a businessman or a ghost—he was a reckoning.
"Hale!" Viktor’s voice echoed down from the landing, dripping with toxic amusement. "Give it up! My men have already locked down the perimeter gates. No one leaves this estate alive!"
"You talk too much, Viktor," I called out, stepping out from behind the pillar into the dim, smoke-hazy light of the foyer.
Two mercenaries rushed the balcony railing, raising their MP5s to fire. I fired twice before their barrels could level—bang, bang—and both dropped over the railing, crashing onto the marble floor below with sickening thuds.
Before a third could pull the trigger, a sudden, deafening explosion ripped through the western wing of the estate.
The entire western wall blew outward in a cascade of fire, steel, and masonry. Through the billowing smoke and dust, a massive armored tactical vehicle crashed straight through the security gates, its heavy plow clearing away Viktor’s parked SUVs like they were plastic toys.
I stared, lowering my weapon slightly.
The side door of the armored truck flew open, and a figure stepped out through the smoke, wearing a heavy tactical vest and holding an assault rifle across his chest.
Even with the tactical helmet and the scars mapping across his jawline, I recognized him instantly.

The dead man had just come home.
