“Lila,” Sawyer choked out, his voice thick with emotion as he pulled the little girl into his arms. “I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know.”
Lila buried her face in his shoulder, her tiny hands clutching the lapels of his jacket the same way she had gripped the cardboard boxes under the drugstore awning. “We know, Uncle Sawyer. Daddy always said you had a good heart. It just got stuck in the dark.”
