Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Master Bedroom

Three days later, CPS and the police cleared us to return home under police escort, but the house felt utterly poisoned. Every shadow in the hallway whispered Ryan’s name. Every drop of water from the faucets sounded like a ticking clock counting down to our destruction.
Lily refused to sleep in her own room, so we dragged her mattress into mine, locking our bedroom door with a heavy deadbolt I had installed myself.
At 3:14 AM, I woke up.
The house was dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator downstairs. But something was wrong. The air in the bedroom felt colder, carrying a faint, unmistakable scent of expensive cologne—the exact brand Ryan wore.
I held my breath, slowly turning my head toward the bedside table.
My phone was gone.
My heart slammed against my ribs. I looked down at the floor. The heavy deadbolt on our bedroom door—the one I personally locked—was sliding slowly out of its metal socket. Click.
Someone was unlocking it from the inside of our bedroom. Or rather, someone who had been hiding inside the walk-in closet all along.
I didn't wake Lily. I slid out from under the blanket, my hand groping blindly along the nightstand until my fingers closed around the heavy glass water pitcher.
The bedroom door creaked open, spilling a thin sliver of hallway light across the carpet. A tall silhouette stepped into the room.
"Looking for this, Sarah?"
Ryan’s voice cut through the dark, smooth and mocking. He held my phone in one hand and a heavy hunting knife in the other.
"How did you get in?" I whispered, rising to my feet, keeping my body between him and the sleeping Lily.
"You think a cheap lock and a police escort can keep me out of my own home?" Ryan stepped closer, the blade glinting under the moonlight. "You made a huge mistake, Sarah. You should have just let her take the baths. Do you have any idea how much work it took to groom her? How careful I had to be?"

"You're a monster," I spat, gripping the handle of the pitcher so hard my knuckles turned white.
"I'm a survivor," Ryan smiled, taking another step. "And tonight, we're going to finish what we started. Starting with your little girl."
