Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Justice

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second—not the local police, but state troopers and federal agents.

Detective Vance kicked open the front door of the house just as Arthur was crawling back through the shattered patio glass, bleeding and screaming in pain. Two federal agents swarmed him instantly, slamming him face-down into the wet grass and slapping heavy steel cuffs on his wrists.

"Clear!" shouted an agent.

Vance rushed into the kitchen, dropping to her knees beside me and my mother. She pressed a clean cloth against my bleeding temple. "Are you alright? Paramedics are right behind us."

"My daughter... is she... is she in the car?" I gasped, my vision fading at the edges.

"She's safe. Child services and female officers are with her right now. She's completely unharmed," Vance said firmly, her eyes full of profound respect. "You brought down a multi-state trafficking ring tonight, Sarah. Arthur and Ryan's network has been dismantled across three states."

As paramedics wheeled me out on a stretcher into the cool, pre-dawn air, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet.

I looked across the driveway.

Sitting in the back of a police cruiser wrapped in a warm blanket was Lily. When she saw me, she rolled down the window, pressed her small hand against the glass, and smiled—a genuine, radiant smile I hadn't seen in nearly a year.

"Mommy," she called out softly, her voice no longer small or terrified. "Can we go home now?"

"Yes, honey," I whispered tears streaming down my face as the first warm rays of morning light washed over us. "We’re going home. And we're finally safe."
