Chapter 9 - CheckmateViktor Kovac stood at the entrance of the kitchen, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a look of absolute, bone-chilling devastation.

Behind him stood Rachel Chen, her submachine gun leveled directly at Marcus’s chest. And behind them both, six heavily armed operatives from Viktor’s private strike team poured through the front doors, sealing every exit.

"Elena," Viktor said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he walked toward her across the ruined glass. "You look... surprised."

Elena’s face drained of all color, the porcelain perfection of her features cracking beneath a sudden, desperate panic. She backed up against the kitchen island, her hands clutching the edge of the marble.

"Viktor..." she breathed, her voice turning instantly into a masterpiece of manipulation, her eyes pooling with artificial tears. "Thank God. Thank God you're safe. The—the men downstairs, they ambushed me! They held a gun to my head, they forced Marcus to—"

"Save it," Viktor interrupted, his tone flat, devoid of emotion. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the gold-plated Cartier lighter, tossing it onto the counter beside her shattered champagne glass. "Marcus already confessed on the secure feed, Elena. And Captain Chen has been recording every transaction you’ve made with the Chicago syndicate for the past four months."

Marcus dropped to his knees on the marble floor, burying his face in his hands. "I'm sorry, Boss... she had my family—she threatened my children—"

"Shut up, Marcus," Viktor didn't even look at him. His gaze remained locked on Elena, watching the final mask of innocence melt away from her face, leaving only a cold, calculating predator beneath.

Elena stared at the lighter, then slowly, the trembling stopped. Her lips curled into a bitter, venomous sneer.

"You stupid, arrogant bastard," Elena spat, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness, turning sharp and venomous. "You really thought a thug from the Moscow gutters could keep an empire like this? I built half your European routes! I made you legitimate! You were nothing without my family's backing!"

"And now," Viktor said, stepping close enough for her to feel the lethal chill radiating from him, "you are everything without a pulse."
