Chapter 7 - Ransom for a Heartbeat

“DANTE!” I screamed, rushing to the balcony edge.
Below, in the pouring rain, two bodies lay still on the stone patio. Surrounding them were dozens of federal agents with spotlights and rival cartel hitmen engaged in a chaotic, chaotic firefight.
Marcus pulled me back away from the ledge. “We have to go! NOW!”
He dragged me into the nursery, scooped up a terrified, crying Mia, and hurled us into the hidden cellar door behind the master closet. We descended down a narrow spiral staircase into the damp subterranean tunnels beneath the island.
For three miles, we ran in darkness, the muffled sound of explosions echoing overhead. Mia sobbed against my chest while I whispered prayers I hadn't used since childhood.
When we finally emerged at a secluded marina on the northern tip of the island, a black speedboat was waiting in the fog. But standing on the dock, holding an umbrella with two armed men beside him, was not an ally.
