Chapter 4 - THE SIRENS ON THE DRIVEWAY

The sound of idling engines echoed from the front yard, followed by the crisp, heavy thud of car doors slamming shut. Through the living room windows, the morning sun glinted off the reflective striping of two unmarked cruisers parked right behind Kyle’s truck and the strangers’ sedans, effectively locking them into the driveway.
Diane let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "Kyle... what is this? What did you do?"
"Nothing!" Kyle stammered, all his casual arrogance evaporating in a single second as the front door pushed open and two uniformed state troopers stepped into the foyer, flanked by Pete.
"Morning, Ray," one of the troopers nodded, his hand resting casually on his utility belt. "Got your call about a suspected financial exploitation and forgery complaint. Looks like we arrived just in time for the meeting."
Mark’s face lost all its color. He slammed the leather portfolio shut, his hands trembling as he tried to shove the fake agreements back into his briefcase.
"This is a civil matter," Mark stammered, his professional composure completely shattered. "There’s no criminal jurisdiction here. It’s a domestic property dispute between family members—"
"Family members?" Pete interrupted, stepping forward and tossing a thick stack of printed emails onto the counter right next to Mark’s briefcase. "Let's talk about family, Mark. Or should I call you by your real name—Marcus Vance? The same Marcus Vance who got indicted in Morris County three years ago for running a shell corporation scam under the name 'KM Property Solutions'?"
Kyle stumbled backward, colliding with the refrigerator. "Wait... Marcus, you said this was a clean setup! You said his signature wouldn't even be scrutinized!"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Mark hissed, lunging for the door.
Evan made a break for the side window, but the second state trooper was already blocking the exit, stepping smoothly into his path with a pair of steel handcuffs dangling from his fingers.
"Nobody is leaving just yet," the trooper said smoothly. "We’ve got active warrants for interstate wire fraud linked to KM Property Solutions, and adding a local municipal forgery charge to the docket is going to make for a very long trial. Turn around, put your hands behind your back, and let's talk about how deep your partnership with Mrs. Malone and her stepson actually goes."
Diane stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, her eyes wide with absolute terror as the handcuffs clicked onto Mark’s wrists. She turned slowly toward me, her voice breaking into a frantic whisper.

"Ray... Ray, please. You can't let them do this. I’m your wife. We swore vows—"
"You swore an oath to find somebody whose retirement checks arrive on time," I said quietly, walking past her to pick up my coffee mug. "And I swore an oath to protect my home, my community, and my life's work. Looks like one of us kept their word."
