Chapter 5 - THE CONFESSION ON WIREThe bullet tore through the main control console three inches from Eleanor’s hand, sending a shower of sparks and electrical smoke exploding into the air.

Eleanor shrieked, dropping her scotch glass as it shattered on the anti-static floor. The server monitors flickered violently, frozen on a screen showing a active data transfer log.
"GET ON THE GROUND! NOW!" Miller roared, stepping over the shattered glass with his weapon raised.
Richard, the family attorney, immediately dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air. "Don't shoot! I was just acting under client instructions! I didn't know about any poisoning! I swear to God I didn't know!"
"Shut up, you sniveling coward!" Eleanor spat at the lawyer, even as an officer slammed her down onto her knees and forced her wrists into steel cuffs.
"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, and destruction of evidence," Miller declared, reading her rights as she was hauled up off the floor.
Eleanor didn't look at the police. She glared at me with a hatred so pure it felt like a physical flame. "You think you’ve won, Camille? You have nothing. The corporate structure is locked. The bank accounts in Singapore are untouchable. You'll spend the rest of your life in court trying to prove a shred of this, while Harper grows up knowing her mother ruined this family."
I didn't answer her. Instead, I reached inside Nolan’s jacket and pulled out a small, metallic device that had been blinking with a tiny green light the entire time.
It was a high-grade digital wire recorder, directly synced to the precinct's secure server.
"I didn't just come here with the police, Eleanor," I said, my voice as cold and smooth as polished ice. "I kept the line open from the moment we crossed the lobby. Every word you just said—about intending to poison me, about framing me for a prescription drug overdose, about the Singapore accounts—was recorded, timestamped, and transmitted directly to the State Prosecutor's office."
Eleanor’s face drained of all color. The haughty, invincible matriarch finally realized the snare had closed around her neck.
"You... you trapped me," she stammered, her voice finally breaking.
"No," I said, walking right up to her face until our noses almost touched. "You trapped yourself the moment you treated your family like assets on a balance sheet. Take her away."
The police dragged Eleanor and the attorney out of the building into the pouring rain.
I stood alone in the dark, hum of the server room. The digital forensics technician immediately stepped up to the console, plugging in a forensic drive to isolate the Singapore transaction ledgers.
"Mrs. Vance?" the technician called out. "You need to look at this."
I walked over to the screen.
"What is it?" I asked.
"The money wasn't just being transferred to Singapore," the technician pointed to a series of encrypted shell company names. "These accounts aren't owned by your mother or your sister."
I frowned, looking closer at the digital signatures required to authorization the offshore transfers.
The master key signature wasn't Eleanor’s. It wasn't Sabrina’s.
The signature belonged to an account created eight years ago under a name I recognized instantly.
My chest tightened as the ground beneath my feet seemed to tilt.
May you like
The signature belonged to my husband.
Nolan.
