Chapter 10 - Justice Delayed

A blinding flash of red and blue light tore through the darkness as a half-dozen unmarked federal SUVs and state police cruisers smashed through the perimeter security gates, sirens wailing in a deafening crescendo.
Simultaneously, tactical spotlights from two hovering police helicopters blinded the tarmac, turning night into blinding daylight.
Victor stopped on the airplane stairs, his face instantly draining of color as a megaphone boomed across the airfield: "FBI! Federal Air Marshals! Step away from the aircraft with your hands visible!"
David Vance gasped, dropping his tablet as federal agents poured out of the cruisers with weapons drawn, instantly surrounding the guards and pinning them to the concrete.
I stood there, wiping the cold sweat from my forehead, a bitter, triumphant smile finally breaking across my face.
As Victor raised his hands in absolute disbelief, I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my smartphone, tapping the active recording screen.
"You really thought David and I didn't have a falling out three months ago, Victor?" I muttered aloud to myself, remembering the secret conversation I had recorded in my study the very morning after I found June on the pantry floor.
It hadn't been David in the car with me initially; it had been an undercover federal investigator working my insider tip. We had played David and Victor against each other, letting them expose their own conspiracy step by step.
As federal agents dragged Victor down the metal stairs in handcuffs, kicking and screaming obscenities into the tarmac wind, he caught my eye one last time. His expression of absolute betrayal mirrored the one I had felt two nights ago in my kitchen.
"You're ruined, Julian!" Victor screamed as they shoved him into the back of a cruiser. "The company is gone!"
"No, Victor," I said quietly, watching the squad car doors slam shut. "The company is finally clean."
Two days later, the headlines across Chicago screamed the scandal: Blackwell Domestic Services Restructured, Millions Recovered for Exploited Workers.
Back at the Lake Forest mansion, the grand dining room table was filled with laughter. June Carter sat at the head of the table with her children, Micah and Lila, eating a warm, home-cooked meal without fear or hiding. Her mother’s medical bills were fully paid, her debt erased, and she had officially been appointed as the new Director of Corporate Welfare for Blackwell Enterprises, ensuring that no employee would ever slip through the cracks again.

I stood by the window, looking out over the manicured lawn under a clear, autumn sun. For the first time in two years, the heavy anchor in my chest was gone.
Sarah’s memory felt warm again, untainted by the lies of the past. And as I raised my coffee cup to toast the quiet morning, I knew that justice, though delayed, had finally found its way home.
