Chapter 1 - The Weight of a VowThe silence in the library was thicker than the smoke creeping under the heavy oak door. Outside, the rhythmic thud of silenced submachine guns echoed against the reinforced glass of the Moretti estate, but inside, the world had narrowed down to the space between Adrian’s wheelchair and the secret passageway.

Adrian stared at the silver ring resting in the palm of my hand. The emblem—a rearing wolf entwined with an olive branch—was unmistakable. It was the crest of the Romano Syndicate, a shadow empire that had ruled the underworld before it was systematically butchered fifteen years ago.
"Gabriel Romano," Adrian murmured, his voice cracking slightly. He looked up, his dark eyes shimmering with a mixture of disbelief and profound grief. "He took a bullet through his left shoulder and another through his spine to pull a terrified fourteen-year-old boy out from under a pile of burning corpses. That boy was me."
My breath hitched. The pieces of a puzzle I had spent my entire life trying to assemble suddenly slammed together with deafening force.
"You..." I stepped back, the silver ring growing heavy in my hand. "The boy my father died for... was you?"
"I searched for years to find his family after I rebuilt my empire," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a desperate rasp as he gripped the wheels of his chair, trying to stand and failing, a flash of frustration crossing his face. "Every intelligence network I had came up empty. They told me the Romanos were completely wiped out. And all this time... you were the surrogate mother of my child."
Before I could process the cosmic cruelty and beauty of that twist, the library doors splintered. Heavy oak wood gave way under the impact of a breach charge.
Footsteps—fast, professional, and deadly—flooded the corridor.
"Get in the passageway," Adrian ordered, his authority returning in an instant, cold and razor-sharp. He drew a suppressed Glock from a holster beneath his blanket with terrifying speed.
"I'm not leaving you," I said, clutching our baby tighter against my chest. The infant began to whimper, sensing the electric terror in the air.
"Melissa, listen to me!" Adrian shouted, his voice echoing off the bookshelf. "The men out there aren't random thugs. They're Vane's cleanup crew. Viktor Vane."
The name hit me like a physical blow. Viktor Vane. My father's former lieutenant. The traitor who murdered my father, stole our empire, and forced my mother and me into hiding for a decade until her medical bills finally cornered me.

"Vane is here?" I whispered, my blood running ice-cold.
"He thinks he’s wiping out the last remnants of the Moretti bloodline," Adrian smirked grimly, cocking his weapon. "He has no idea he's about to walk into a slaughterhouse run by the son of the man he tried to erase."
