The bullet holes in the mahogany doors had been repaired, the shattered glass dome of the foyer replaced with reinforced stained glass depicting a rearing wolf intertwined with an olive branch—the union of the Romano and Moretti dynasties.
In the master study, Adrian sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers and shipping manifests. His physical therapy was progressing faster than any doctor predicted; he could now stand unsupported for a few minutes at a time using heavy steel braces.
I walked in carrying a tray of espresso and fresh pastries, setting them down beside his laptop.
"You're working too hard again," I teased, leaning over his shoulder to kiss his cheek.
"I have a lot of mouths to feed now, Mrs. Moretti," Adrian smirked, catching my hand and pulling me down onto his lap. "And an entire syndicate to restructure under a new flag. The Romano-Moretti alliance is making the other families in Europe very nervous."
"Let them be nervous," I replied, wrapping my arms around his neck. "They don't know what it's like to mess with a mafia king who has finally found his queen."
Suddenly, the heavy oak door creaked open.
Our three-month-old son stood—well, sat—propped up in a motorized toy car Adrian had custom-built for him, rolling across the Persian rug with a gleeful gurgle, chasing a stray cat.
