Chapter 1 - THE ERUPTION

The silence in the living room was so absolute you could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the background. The reckless laughter that had filled the house seconds ago dissolved into suffocating tension.

Ethan’s eyes swept across the room. He didn’t scream. He didn’t throw anything. The silence coming from him was far more terrifying than rage. His younger sister, Chloe, shrank back into the cushions of the sofa, the plastic bag of chips slipping from her numb fingers. Her friends—three guys and two girls who had been lounging like royalty moments prior—suddenly found intense interest in the floor patterns.

“Get out,” Ethan said. His voice was low, vibrating with an ominous stillness.

“Ethan, come on, we were just—” Chloe began, trying to summon her usual manipulative charm.

“GET OUT.”

The command tore through the room like thunder. Chloe’s friends didn’t wait for a second invitation. They scrambled off the furniture, leaving behind half-empty soda cans, scattered crumbs, and open wrapper clutter, effectively abandoning Chloe in seconds. The front door slammed shut behind them, leaving the siblings alone.

Chloe stood up, her face turning red with humiliation. “You can’t talk to my friends like that! Who do you think you are? Dad left me in charge of—”

Before she could finish, Ethan stepped into her personal space. His shadow completely engulfed her. “You turned my pregnant wife into your maid?”

“She offered!” Chloe lied, her voice cracking. “She said she wanted to help!”

“She’s seven months pregnant, Chloe! Her ankles are swollen, she can barely stand for ten minutes, and you have her scrubbing dishes after your deadbeat friends while you sit here barking orders?!” Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard a vein throbbed on his temple. “In my house? Under my roof?”

“It’s Dad’s house too!” Chloe shrieked, defensive tears welling up. “And she’s lived here for free while you’re out playing hero at work!”

Ethan leaned in, his tone dropping to a lethal whisper. “Dad died six months ago, Chloe. I pay the mortgage. I pay for your tuition. I buy your clothes. And starting right now, you are going to pick up every single piece of trash in this room. If this house isn't spotless in twenty minutes, I am cutting off your allowance, taking your car keys, and tossing your bags onto the curb.”

Chloe gasped, opening her mouth to fight back, but the raw, unhinged threat in Ethan’s eyes stopped her dead in her tracks. She swallowed hard, lowered her head, and began picking up the trash with trembling hands.

Ethan didn't wait to watch. He turned on his heel and walked back into the kitchen.

The kitchen was still. Diana was leaning heavily against the edge of the counter, one hand clutching her rounded abdomen, the other resting against the wet porcelain of the sink. Her chest rose and fell in ragged breaths.

“Diana,” Ethan whispered softly, his entire demeanor shifting instantly from predator to protector.

When she turned to look at him, the color drained from his face. Diana was pale, covered in a cold sweat, and tears were silently running down her cheeks.

“Ethan...” she gasped, her hand tightening over her stomach. “Something’s wrong.”

He rushed forward just in time to catch her as her knees gave out. As he swept her into his arms, his eyes caught the hem of her pale yellow dress.

It was stained with blood.
