Chapter 6 - THE ULTIMATE TWIST

Two weeks later.
The nightmare seemed to have finally ended. Chloe was held without bail, facing charges of attempted murder, extortion, and armed robbery. Victor Sterling had survived his chest wounds and was facing lifetime imprisonment along with his syndicate members.
At the hospital, the miracle they had prayed for finally happened. Little Lily was taken off the ventilator, breathing strong on her own. Diana had been discharged from her ward and was sitting in a wheelchair next to the incubator, cradling their tiny daughter against her chest for the very first time.
Ethan stood beside them, leaning down to wrap his arms around his wife and child.
“We made it,” Diana whispered, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. “She’s safe, Ethan. We’re safe.”
“I’ll never let anyone hurt either of you again,” Ethan promised, kissing her lips softly. “Never.”
Just then, a knock came at the door of the private room. A tall man in a tailored suit stepped in, carrying a leather briefcase.
“Mr. Vance? Mrs. Vance?” the man asked politely. “I’m Arthur Pendelton, your late father’s private estate attorney.”
Ethan frowned, standing up. “Attorney Pendelton? I thought my father didn't have an attorney of record for his estate.”
“He did,” Mr. Pendelton replied, stepping inside and closing the door. “Your father hired me discreetly three months before his passing. I was instructed to come forward only after the criminal proceedings regarding Chloe Vance were officially initiated by the district attorney.”
Ethan and Diana exchanged confused looks.
“What are you talking about?” Ethan asked.
Mr. Pendelton set his briefcase on the table and opened it, pulling out an officially sealed envelope with a wax stamp.
“The document your sister found in your father’s office... was a decoy,” Mr. Pendelton revealed calmly. “Your father knew about Chloe’s gambling debts months before he died. But he also knew something else.”
Mr. Pendelton looked directly at Diana.
“Your father discovered that Chloe was not his biological daughter.”
Ethan’s jaw dropped. “What?!”
“Twenty-two years ago, your mother had an affair,” Mr. Pendelton explained. “Your father kept it a secret to protect the family name, but when Chloe started consorting with criminals, he took a DNA test. It was negative. That’s why he cut her off entirely.”
Ethan was stunned, trying to process the revelation. “So... who gets the estate?”
“That brings me to the second part of your father’s final will,” Mr. Pendelton said, taking out a official DNA certificate and a title deed.
“Your father felt an immense guilt regarding a secret he carried to his grave,” the attorney continued, his tone turning somber. “Thirty years ago, before he met your mother, your father had a child with a woman he abandoned in another city. A daughter he never publicly claimed, but secretly watched over his entire life.”
Ethan felt a chill run down his spine. “Who?”
Mr. Pendelton walked over to the wheelchair, pulling out a document, and gently handed it to Diana.
“Your father left the entire $10 million real estate empire, the family fortune, and all liquid assets... to you, Diana.”
Diana gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “What?! No... that’s impossible! I’m an orphan! I grew up in foster care!”
“You grew up in foster care because your biological father paid off your mother to give you up,” Mr. Pendelton said softly. “Your father’s final act of redemption was marrying you to his biological son, Ethan—unknowingly to both of you—so that his true bloodline would inherit everything.”
Ethan felt the floor drop out from beneath him. He stared at Diana. Diana stared back at him in absolute horror and disbelief.
“Wait...” Ethan’s voice trembled uncontrollably. “If Diana is my father’s daughter... then Diana is...”
Mr. Pendelton looked down at the newborn baby sleeping peacefully in Diana’s arms, then looked up at Ethan with a solemn expression.

“Yes, Ethan,” Mr. Pendelton whispered. “Diana is your half-sister.”
The silence in the room was absolute. The monitor beat steadily in the background—beep... beep... beep...—as the darkest secret of the Vance family exploded into the light, changing their lives forever.
