Chapter 7 - The Church’s Darkest Secret: Laundering Money in the Name of FaithThe following morning, national news outlets picked up the story. Headlines blazed across CNN, Fox News, and major digital publications: ATLANTA MEGACHURCH AND DEFENSE CONTRACT FRAUD: REVEREND CHARLES WHITMORE'S EMPIRE COLLAPSES IN FEDERAL STING.

Photos of my father standing frozen on stage at the Oakwood Legacy Club, side-by-side with images of federal agents raiding the church parsonage, dominated morning television broadcasts. The community that had worshipped him for decades was in a state of collective shock. Parishioners gathered outside the boarded-up sanctuary doors, holding signs of disbelief and anger as reporters swarmed the plaza.

Inside the federal field office, I reviewed the final forensic audit of the Whitmore Legacy Foundation's financial records. The scale of the corruption was staggering. Over eight million dollars had been funneled through dummy corporations over a four-year period, with a significant portion traced back to compromised defense technology grants.

General Pierce walked into my office, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a printed copy of the morning paper. She tossed the paper onto my desk, pointing at the front-page photograph of my father looking defeated as federal marshals escorted him for questioning.

"Your father’s church has officially been seized by federal order," General Pierce stated, taking a seat across from me. "The IRS is revoking their tax-exempt status permanently. The board of directors has resigned en masse, and several local politicians mentioned in Blake’s physical ledger are currently facing emergency ethics investigations."

"Good," I replied, leaning back in my chair. "They hid behind the pulpit for too long. It’s time accountability caught up with them."

"How is your mother holding up?" General Pierce asked, her voice softening slightly. "We received word that she attempted to check herself into a private clinic in North Carolina this morning, but her credit cards were declined due to the asset freeze."

"She’s panicking because she’s never had to face the real world without a servant, a credit limit, or a social status to hide behind," I said honestly. "For my entire life, my mother made sure I knew I didn't fit her mold. She wanted a daughter who wore designer dresses, married a wealthy corporate executive like Blake, and smiled for the society pages. Instead, she got a Department of Defense cybersecurity adviser who refused to play their game."

"And look where it got you," General Pierce smiled faintly. "Saving national security infrastructure and taking down a multi-million-dollar corruption ring in your spare time."

Before I could answer, my secure terminal chimed. A priority notification flashed across the screen from Washington: DIRECTIVE FROM THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE.

I clicked the file open, scanning the encrypted text. My eyes widened slightly.

"General," I looked up, meeting her gaze. "The Pentagon wants to brief me on a new cross-agency cyber intelligence task force operating out of Europe. They want me to lead it."

General Pierce’s smile widened into a proud grin. "Well, Colonel Lane, it looks like your career is just getting started. As for your family... I think you’ve finally closed that chapter for good."
