Chapter 6 - The Final AscentThe grand foyer of the Sterling estate was a chaotic wash of flashing red and blue lights bleeding through the towering arched windows.

Daniel burst out of the basement stairwell just in time to see Margaret frantically punching the emergency override code into the main wall-mounted security panel by the front door. Her fingers were trembling so violently she kept hitting the wrong keys, the keypad beeping angrily in protest.

“Stop right there, Margaret!” a voice boomed from the open double doors.

Federal marshals, clad in tactical gear, swarmed across the pristine marble floor, their boots echoing like thunder through the mansion. Behind them strode Detective Vance of the State Financial Crimes Division, his badge gleaming under the crystal chandelier.

Margaret whipped around, her hands raised in theatrical surrender, tears of pure rage spilling down her cheeks.

“This is a mistake! It’s a domestic dispute! My son is mentally unstable, he staged this whole thing!” Margaret shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as two officers stepped forward, sliding cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. “You can’t do this to me! Do you know who I am? I am the Sterling family!”

“That’s exactly why we’re here, Mrs. Sterling,” Detective Vance said coldly, pulling a digital tablet from his coat and flashing the holographic federal warrant. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, forced administration of controlled substances, domestic battery, and unlawful imprisonment.”

Daniel walked slowly into the foyer, his breath coming in steady, relieved gasps. Behind him, Rosa wheeled Ava out from the basement stairs, her face pale but her head held high.

Margaret glared at her son with a hatred so pure it could have melted glass. “You destroyed everything,” she spat as the officers began to guide her toward the doors. “Your father would be ashamed of what you’ve done to this family.”

“No, Mom,” Daniel replied quietly, stepping up beside his wife and placing a gentle, reassuring hand on her shoulder. “For the first time in our lives, my father would finally be proud.”

As the heavy oak doors closed behind the marshals, taking Margaret and her reign of terror with them, the oppressive silence of the mansion lifted. But the story—and the hidden legacy of the Sterling empire—was far from over.
