"She’s been living in the shadows," Adrian said, his hand hovering over the 'Code Blue' button for my bay. "She’s been in trouble for years, and I’ve been paying to keep her safe."

Priya, the surgeon, looked between us, her face hardening. "We don't have time for family history, Adrian. Rachel’s placental abruption is accelerating. If I don't get her into that OR in five minutes, we lose the baby and potentially her."
