Chapter 7 - Blood and Obsidian

Before Julian could even turn around, a dark, blur-like shadow erupted from the elevator.

It was Lorenzo.

He didn’t shout. He didn’t hesitate. In one brutal, lightning-fast motion, Lorenzo crossed the room, lunged at Julian, and slammed him violently against the glass wall. The heavy impact cracked the reinforced pane from top to bottom, showering the floor with glittering shards of safety glass.

The silenced pistol slipped from Julian’s fingers, clattering uselessly across the hardwood.

Julian gasped for air, his face turning a sickly purple as Lorenzo’s massive hand locked around his throat, pinning him three feet off the ground. Lorenzo’s face was an absolute mask of cold, terrifying fury—the face of a man who ruled the New York underworld with an iron fist.

“You...” Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal, absolute chill. “You stepped into my tower. You threatened my company. And worst of all... you frightened my people.”

“Lorenzo... wait...” Julian choked out, his manic confidence entirely evaporated, replaced by primitive terror. “We’re... we’re partners in the old guard... you can’t—”

“I am the only guard left in this city,” Lorenzo interrupted, his obsidian eyes narrowing into slits of pure death.

With a sickening crunch, Lorenzo slammed Julian’s head against the glass frame, rendering him unconscious instantly. He let the limp body drop to the floor like a sack of garbage.

Marcus stepped out of the elevator a second later, calmly stepping over Julian’s motionless form. “Shall I dispose of the package, Mr. Rossi?”

“Take him to the harbor,” Lorenzo said coldly, wiping a speck of dust off the sleeve of his shirt. “Make sure his corporate friends in Zurich know what happens when they test me.”

“Right away, sir.” Marcus signaled two armed guards, who hoisted Julian up by his arms and dragged him backward into the elevator. The doors slid shut, sealing away the violence as if nothing had ever happened.

The office plunged back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

I was still standing against my desk, trembling from head to toe, the crystal paperweight still gripped tightly in my white-knuckled fist.

Lorenzo turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The terrifying monster of the underworld vanished in an instant, replaced by a man whose gaze softened with an intense, raw vulnerability as he walked toward me.

“Elena,” Lorenzo murmured, closing the distance between us. He reached out, gently prying the heavy paperweight from my trembling fingers and setting it aside. “Are you hurt?”

“I... I’m fine,” I whispered, my voice shaking as tears of delayed shock finally welled in my eyes. “I thought... for a second, I thought it was over.”

“Nothing is over until I say it is,” Lorenzo said softly. He reached out, his warm, strong hands cupping my face, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray tear from my cheek. “You stood your ground. Even with a gun pointed at your chest, you didn't break.”

“Because I had no choice,” I whispered, looking up into his dark, mesmerizing eyes.

May you like

“You always have a choice, Elena,” Lorenzo replied, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register as his face drew closer to mine. “And every day... I want your choice to be me.”

Before I could answer, his lips met mine in a fierce, breathless kiss that melted away every trace of fear, danger, and doubt. In the heart of Manhattan’s darkest empire, surrounded by broken glass and bleeding shadows, I realized the terrifying truth: I had walked into a trap, but I never wanted to escape.
