Chapter 8 - The Empire We Built

One year later.
The rain beat a steady rhythm against the massive glass windows of the penthouse suite, but inside, the atmosphere was warm, glowing with the soft light of a hundred candles and the sound of quiet laughter.
Maison Delacour was long gone, but Aurelia Holdings was now the undisputed crown jewel of New York’s luxury retail and real estate market. Under my leadership, we had completely revolutionized the corporate landscape—implementing strict ethical labor standards, community support programs, and a zero-tolerance policy for corporate cruelty. We didn't just sell luxury; we redefined it.
And at the head of the empire, sitting across from me at the massive mahogany dining table, was the man who had dragged me out of obscurity and into the fire.
Mia sat between us, chattering excitedly about her school art project while happily stacking pancakes on her plate, her dark curls bouncing with every laugh.
Lorenzo poured a fresh cup of coffee into my mug, his dark, obsidian eyes sparkling with a warmth that only a very few people in this world ever got to see. He reached across the table, his warm fingers intertwining seamlessly with mine.
“You’ve quieted the whole city, Madam CEO,” Lorenzo murmured with a faint, knowing smirk. “Even the old guard in Zurich sends their regards and begs for your mercy.”
“I don't do mercy, Mr. Rossi,” I smiled, squeezing his hand back as I looked from him to little Mia, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of peace settle deep into my bones. “I only do justice.”
Lorenzo chuckled, a rich, resonant sound that filled the penthouse, completely drowning out the storm outside.

We had built an empire on the edge of a razor blade—surviving betrayal, violence, and the darkest shadows of the New York underworld. But as I leaned back against Lorenzo’s shoulder, watching the city lights shimmer through the misty glass, I knew one thing for certain:
No matter how dark the storm got, we were the ones holding the lightning.
