Chapter 9 - THE NEW BALANCE SHEETThree weeks later, the rain over Manhattan finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant autumn afternoon.

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Hale Tower was packed to capacity. Every senior vice president, regional director, and partner sat in absolute, pin-drop silence around the massive mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Dominic Hale, looking like a king upon a throne of glass and steel.
Standing right beside him—not behind him, not tucked away in a cubicle, but right beside him—was Nora Bennett.
She wore a sharp, tailored emerald-green dress that hugged her curves to perfection. The white sling was gone, replaced by a sleek posture and an aura of absolute, unshakable confidence. The white tape above her eyebrow had faded into a faint, barely noticeable line.
"Before we review the Q4 projections," Dominic’s deep baritone cut through the silence of the room, "there is an internal restructuring announcement."
Murmurs rippled through the executives. Everyone knew about Victor Raines’s dramatic midnight arrest. Rumors had swirled through Wall Street like wildfire: embezzlement, federal indictments, offshore shell companies. But nobody knew who had uncovered the leak.
Dominic turned his head slightly, looking directly at Nora.
"Effective immediately," Dominic announced, his voice echoing clearly across the room, "the position of Chief Financial Officer and Managing Partner of Hale Enterprises is being filled by Nora Bennett."
Gasps echoed around the table. Several senior executives dropped their pens.
Nora didn't blink. She stepped forward, placing a fresh blue binder right in the center of the mahogany table, exactly where Dominic could reach it.
"The Q4 numbers have been audited, reconciled, and balanced," Nora said, her voice steady, crisp, and commanding the complete attention of every single person in the room. "Every subsidiary is accounted for. Every risk is mitigated. And Ashford Strategic Partners has been permanently erased from our ledger."

Dominic looked at her, a flicker of profound respect and burning desire shining in his gray eyes. He reached across the table, his fingers brushing lightly over hers before he opened the blue binder.
"See?" Dominic said to the stunned room of executives, a dangerous, satisfied smile playing on his lips. "That is how you do the math."
