Chapter 5 - THE SANCTUARY OF SECRETS

The storm was howling over Lake Michigan as Dante and Ruby arrived at the abandoned ruins of Saint Jude’s Orphanage on the outskirts of Chicago.

Dante’s shoulder was bandaged, his face pale but determined. He refused to let Ruby out of his sight. As they navigated the crumbling, water-damaged basement of the old brick building, the weight of their shared history hung heavy in the air.

"My father brought me here once," Dante murmured, his flashlight beam cutting through the damp darkness. "He told me that sometimes, the only way to protect the things you love is to bury them so deep that even you forget where they are."

"Did he love you, Dante?" Ruby asked softly, her flats splashing in the shallow puddles.

Dante paused. "He loved the family. He loved the empire. He didn't have time to love a son. He spent twenty-one years stripping away every soft part of me to make me strong enough to succeed him."

"He was wrong," Ruby said, stepping in front of him, forcing him to stop. She reached up, her warm hand resting against his stubbled cheek. "Being strong doesn't mean you have to be empty, Dante."

Dante looked down at her, his defenses completely crumbling. He leaned into her touch, his eyes closing for a brief second as he felt the warmth of her hand—a warmth he hadn't realized he had been starving for his entire life.

"If we survive tonight," Dante whispered, "I want to see your bakery."

"I'll make you the best lemon tart of your life," she promised.

They found the vault behind a brick wall marked with a faded carving of a Saint Jude medal. Ruby inserted the brass key. With a heavy, grinding sound of gears that hadn't turned in two decades, the heavy iron door swung open.

Inside, resting on a velvet cushion, was a leather-bound book.
