Chapter 6 - THE SWEETEST REVENGE

"Drop the ledger, Moretti," Marco Valenti sneered, his fingers wrapping around Lena’s throat. "Or the baker's friends die first."
Dante’s hands clenched into fists, the veins in his neck bulging. "This is between us, Valenti. Let them go."
"No," Ruby said, stepping forward.
Everyone in the room looked at her. She didn't look like a victim. She stood tall, her curves prominent, her eyes flashing with a fierce, brilliant anger.
"You think you have all the cards, Valenti," Ruby said, her voice echoing in the vault. "But you forgot one thing. My father didn't just hide the ledger. He knew what was in it."
She looked at Dante, a secret message passing between them.
"The ledger isn't just a list of names," Ruby continued, taking a step toward the Don. "It's a trigger. If the vault is opened without the secondary code—which only I know—the entire building's old gas lines, which my father rigged twenty-one years ago, will detonate."
Valenti laughed, but his eyes darted nervously to the rusted pipes overhead. "You're bluffing, girl."
"Try me," Ruby said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out her baking timer—a small, clicking metal device she had taken from the bakery. She held it up, her thumb resting on the dial. "I know exactly how much pressure it takes to make something explode. I do it every day."
The distraction was all Dante needed.
With lightning speed, Dante drew his backup weapon and fired, striking the two guards holding Lena and Evelyn. Ruby threw herself to the floor, dragging her friends down with her as the vault erupted into a chaotic firefight.
Dante moved like a shadow, neutralizing the remaining mercenaries with ruthless precision. When Marco Valenti tried to flee with the ledger, Dante tackled him to the ground, pinning the older Don beneath his weight.
"This is for my father," Dante growled, slamming his fist into Valenti's jaw, knocking him cold.
The sirens of the Chicago Police department began to wail in the distance—called by an anonymous tip Dante had set up hours before.
EPILOGUE: THE PERFECT BATCHSix months later, the front doors of Sweet Haven Bakery opened, letting in a cool autumn breeze and the sound of the Chicago streets.
The bakery was twice its original size now, having expanded into the empty lot next door thanks to an anonymous "angel investor" who insisted on remaining off the books.
Ruby stood behind the counter, wearing a clean white apron over a green dress that hugged her curves perfectly. She was laughing with Lena as she arranged a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls.
The bell above the door chimed.
A man walked in. He wore a charcoal suit, but his tie was gone, and his top button was undone. His dark beard was trimmed, and his gray eyes—once so cold and empty—were warm as they locked onto Ruby.
Dante Moretti walked past the long line of customers, who quickly stepped aside, recognizing the man who now legally controlled the city’s largest legitimate real estate empire.
He didn't look at the pastries. He only looked at her.
"I believe you promised me a lemon tart," Dante said, resting his hands on the clean wooden counter.
Ruby smiled, leaning forward, her face just inches from his. "I did. But you're late."

"I had to clear my schedule," Dante murmured, his hand reaching out to gently wipe a stray speck of flour from her cheek. "For the rest of my life."
As he leaned in to kiss her, the entire bakery clapped. And for the first time in twenty-one years, the Mafia Boss realized that the softest part of himself was the only part worth saving.
