Chapter 1 - THE TERROR IN THE MISTThe silence of the mountain broke not with a roar, but with the sickeningly quiet rustle of wet pine needles.

The lioness stepped into the clearing. She wasn't just a wild animal; she was a leviathan of muscle, scar tissue, and primal fury. Her golden coat was matted with mud and rain, and across her left shoulder was a deep, jagged scar that looked freshly torn. But it wasn't her size that froze the blood in my veins—it was her eyes. They weren't the eyes of a thankful mother in a fairy tale. They were cold, yellow, and filled with an unhinged, predatory madness.
The tiny cub at my feet whined, scrambling backward into my shivering legs.
“Don’t move,” I whispered to myself, though my voice was nothing more than a breathless rasp. “If you run, you die.”
The lioness lowered her head, her shoulders bunching up as her massive paws gripped the damp earth. A low, subterranean growl vibrated through the ground, so deep I felt it echoing inside my chest cavity. She took one step forward. Then another. She was barely ten feet away. I could smell the metallic tang of wet fur and raw meat on her breath.
I slowly raised my hands, palms out, trying to make myself look harmless. "I... I saved him," I stammered, my body shaking so violently my teeth clicked together. "Look. He’s safe. I didn't hurt him."
She didn't care. To her, I was an intruder standing over her helpless offspring.
Suddenly, the cub let out a sharp, painful squeal—it had tripped over a jagged rock and rolled onto its side. The lioness snapped.
With an explosive, deafening roar that rattled the trees, she lunged.
I didn't think; my survival instinct took over completely. I hurled my heavy backpack straight at her face and threw myself backward over the muddy slope. The lioness caught the backpack mid-air, her massive jaws ripping through the canvas and sending my supplies flying into the mist.
I hit the ground hard, rolling down the rocky incline. Thorns tore at my skin, and sharp stones bruised my ribs, but the adrenaline masked the pain. I scrambled to my feet, panting frantically, and looked back up the ridge.
The lioness was standing on the ledge above me, her deadly yellow eyes locked onto mine. She roared again, a sound of absolute vengeance, and began her descent down the slope, moving with terrifying speed and agility.
I turned and ran blindly into the dense, fog-covered forest.
The woods were a labyrinth of shadow and damp pine. My breath came in ragged, burning gasps. Behind me, I could hear the crunch of snapping branches and heavy, deliberate footfalls closing the distance. She was tracking me. She was hunting me.
Up ahead, through the thick veil of mist, I caught a glimpse of a dark, rusted structure—an abandoned logging cabin from decades past.
"Please, be open!" I screamed in my head.
I sprinted toward it with the last ounce of strength in my legs. I vaulted over a fallen trunk, reached the rotting wooden porch, and slammed my shoulder against the heavy oak door. It didn't budge.
Behind me, a low growl echoed from the bushes just twenty yards away.
Panicking, I threw my entire body weight against the door again. With a loud CRACK, the rusted lock snapped, and the door swung open. I slipped inside, slammed the heavy door shut, and threw the rusty iron bolt into place just as a massive body slammed against the wood from the outside.
The cabin shook violently. Dust rained down from the wooden rafters.
I backed away from the door, clutching my bleeding arm, heart hammering against my ribs. I thought I was safe. I thought the thick oak would hold her back.
Then, I heard something that made my heart completely stop.
It wasn't coming from outside the cabin. It was coming from the dark corner of the room behind me.
A human voice. A raspy, desperate whisper.
