Chapter 7 - THE MASTERMIND'S TRAPThe intercom speaker crackled with static before the cold voice spoke again.

"Did you really think a wounded animal led you here by chance, Leo? We lured you. The tracking chip inside the cub guided you straight to our front door."
"Dr. Vance..." Leo spat, clutching the wall for support. "You're insane! You released a biological weapon on this mountain!"
"I created the ultimate apex predator," the voice replied smoothly. "And now, I am going to clean up my mess. Gas deployment in Sub-Level 3 in three minutes."
Above us, heavy mechanical valves hissed open. Thick, sweet-smelling yellow gas began pouring from the ventilation grates near the ceiling.
"Nerve agent!" Leo panicked, coughing violently. "If we breathe that in, we're dead in thirty seconds!"
"Where is the server room?!" I screamed, ripping off a piece of my wet shirt and wrapping it around my mouth and nose.
"Down the hall! Left side!"
We sprinted through the blinding fog of gas as the air grew heavy and toxic. The lioness, coughing violently, used her remaining strength to smash her heavy body against a reinforced glass window leading into the main control room.
CRASH!
The heavy glass shattered into a thousand pieces. We tumbled into the control room, gasping for fresh air.
Leo threw himself onto the central computer terminal, his fingers flying across the glowing keyboard. "I'm bypassing the security override! I'm initiating the global broadcast!"
On the large monitor in front of us, a progress bar appeared: UPLOADING LAB DATA... 20%... 40%...
Suddenly, the heavy door to the control room was kicked open.
Dr. Vance stepped into the room, flanked by two heavily armed guards. He was a middle-aged man in a tailored suit, holding a sleek black pistol in his gloved hand.
"Option time is over, Leo," Vance said coldly, aiming his gun directly at Leo's head. "Cancel the upload, or I blow your brains out right now."
Leo froze, his hand hovering over the keyboard.
I looked at the lioness. She was lying on the floor, barely conscious, poisoned by the nerve gas leaking into the room. She looked at me, her eyes heavy, pleading.
"Do it, Leo," I whispered.
"What?" Vance sneered, turning his pistol toward me. "You want to die, girl?"
"No," I said, stepping forward, taking Vance's focus off the computer screen. "I want you to pay for what you did."
UPLOADING LAB DATA... 85%... 95%...
"Insolent brat," Vance growled, raising his weapon to pull the trigger.
COMPLETED.
A loud chime filled the room as the file uploaded to every federal agency in the country.
Vance's face twisted in absolute fury. "Kill them both!" he roared.
Before the guards could pull their triggers, a high-pitched cry echoed from the broken window.
