Chapter 3 - A Blood-Red Truth: The Terrifying Secret Hidden in the Mafia King's Safe

"Down!" Marcus roared.
In a fraction of a second, his arm clamped around my waist, and he threw us both to the marble floor just as the deafening roar of gunfire shattered the ballroom glass. Screams erupted from every direction. The darkness was illuminated only by the rhythmic, terrifying muzzle flashes of automatic weapons.
Marcus shielded my body with his own, his massive frame absorbing the impact of falling debris. I buried my face in his chest, my hands clutching his shirt as the world dissolved into pure chaos.
"Alessandro! Secure the exit!" Marcus bellowed over the noise, his own weapon drawn, firing precise, deadly shots into the dark.
Within minutes, the sirens wailed in the distance, and the attackers retreated into the night. The backup generators kicked in, bathing the ruined ballroom in a dim, eerie red emergency light. Blood smeared the marble floors, and shattered crystal from the chandeliers littered the room.
Marcus pulled me up, his eyes scanning me for injuries. "Are you hurt? Clara, look at me. Are you hit?"
"I... I don't think so," I stammered, my body shaking so violently my teeth chattered.
Without another word, Marcus swept me into his arms and carried me out through the service exit, where a secondary armored vehicle was already waiting. We sped away from the hotel, the city lights passing by in a blur.
We didn't return to the penthouse. Instead, the SUV drove deep into the forested outskirts of the city, pulling up to a heavily fortified stone estate surrounded by high iron gates.
"This is the safehouse," Marcus said as he led me inside. The interior was rustic, filled with dark wood and stone fireplaces, a stark contrast to the sterile modern luxury of the penthouse.
He escorted me to a master bedroom. "Stay here. Alessandro and I have to handle the fallout. You are safe here, Clara. No one knows this place exists."
He turned to leave, but I grabbed his sleeve. "Marcus, why? Why did they attack? Vincenzo Moretti... he looked at me like he knew me. Why?"
Marcus paused, staring at my hand on his sleeve. Slowly, he reached up and covered my hand with his. "Sleep, Clara. We will talk in the morning."
But I couldn't sleep.
Two hours later, when the house had fallen completely silent, I crept out of the bedroom. I needed answers. I walked down the dim hallway, my bare feet silent on the hardwood floors. I passed Marcus’s study and noticed the door was slightly ajar, a warm amber light spilling out onto the floor.
I pushed the door open slowly. The room was empty, Marcus presumably still downstairs with his men.
My eyes were drawn to a massive iron safe built into the bookshelf. To my shock, the heavy door was slightly ajar, as if Marcus had been interrupted while retrieving something.
My heart pounded in my throat. I knew I shouldn't. I knew the rules of survival in this world. But the mystery of my own life was too overwhelming to ignore.
I walked over and gently pulled the heavy safe door open. Inside were stacks of cash, several passports, and a thick black leather folder.
I pulled the folder out and opened it. Inside were documents, financial ledgers, and... photos.
My breath caught.
The photos were of me.
But they weren't recent. There were photos of me at eighteen, graduating high school. Photos of me at sixteen, riding my bike. Photos of me at twelve, laughing with my mother in our backyard.
There were documents dating back over ten years. I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning the text. It was a detailed ledger of payments made by Valentino Enterprises to various banks, medical facilities, and landlords.
My mother’s cancer treatment ten years ago—paid for by an anonymous donor. My sister’s private school tuition—paid for by a shell company. Our rent, our groceries, our entire lives.

It hadn't been my father’s debt that brought Marcus to our apartment three years ago. My father had never owed money to dangerous people.
My father had sold me to Marcus Valentino ten years before we ever walked down the aisle.
