Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal: When the Most Trusted Man in the Empire Pulls the Trigger

The betrayal stung worse than any physical wound. Alessandro had been Marcus’s right hand for a decade. He was the one Marcus trusted with his life—and with mine.
"Why, Alessandro?" I asked, keeping my voice steady, remembering everything Marcus had taught me over the past week. Never show fear. Look for the leverage.
"Because Marcus is blinded by you!" Alessandro spat, his eyes wild. "He built an empire on blood and steel, and now he's compromising everything just to keep a schoolteacher's daughter safe! Moretti is going to wipe him out, and I'm not going down with a sinking ship."
"You think Vincenzo Moretti will keep his word to a traitor?" I challenged, taking a slow step back into the bunker. "In our world, Alessandro, traitors are used and then discarded like trash. You know that better than anyone."
"Shut up!" he roared, stepping into the bunker and grabbing my arm, dragging me toward the exit.
Before we reached the stairs, a heavy explosion rocked the estate. The walls trembled, and dust rained down from the ceiling. The sounds of gunfire erupted from the floor above.
Marcus was back.
Alessandro cursed, tightening his grip on my arm as he dragged me up the stairs and into the main living room. The grand glass windows were shattered, and several of Marcus's loyal guards lay dead on the floor.
Suddenly, the front door was kicked open, and Marcus strode in. He looked like the devil himself, his face splattered with blood, a smoking assault rifle in his hands. His eyes instantly locked onto Alessandro holding me.
"Let her go, Alessandro," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. "And I might let you die quickly."
"Drop the gun, Marcus!" Alessandro screamed, pressing the barrel of his pistol against my temple. "Drop it, or I'll blow her brains out right here!"
Marcus didn't drop his weapon. Instead, his gaze shifted slightly, meeting my eyes. In that split second, a silent communication passed between us.
Trust me, his eyes said. I do, mine replied.
I didn't wait for Marcus to shoot. I slammed my heel down onto Alessandro’s foot—the very foot I had injured a week ago, now fully healed and wearing a heavy leather boot.
Alessandro gasped in pain, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second. In that tiny window of time, I grabbed his wrist, twisting it outward just as Marcus had taught me, and drove my elbow hard into his ribs.
Alessandro stumbled back, his gun firing harmlessly into the ceiling.
Bang!
A single, precise shot echoed through the room.
Alessandro froze. A neat, red hole appeared in the center of his forehead. His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed heavily to the floor, dead before he hit the ground.
Marcus lowered his rifle, his chest heaving. He rushed over to me, throwing his arms around me and pulling me into a fierce, crushing embrace.
"You're okay," he breathed, his voice shaking. "God, Clara, you're okay."
"I did what you taught me," I whispered, holding him just as tightly.
But as we stood there amidst the ruins of our sanctuary, the sound of slow clapping echoed from the shattered doorway.

We spun around to see Vincenzo Moretti walking in, flanked by a dozen heavily armed men. And beside him, tied up and bleeding, was my father.
"Bravo," Vincenzo sneered, looking at me with a sickening grin. "What a beautiful family reunion."
