Chapter 5 - THE HUNT BEGINSWith my daughter secured under heavy guard in a private, high-security medical wing, I retreated to my temporary command post—a penthouse suite overlooking Manhattan.

Leo was sitting in front of six curved monitors, his fingers flying across mechanical keyboards.

"Boss," Leo said without looking up. "We’ve completely dismantled the Trinity's digital infrastructure. But we have a bigger problem."

"Speak."

"Arthur Cole—Ethan's father. He didn't panic when he realized his son was missing. He called in an old favors list. He just hired The Vanguard Group."

I paused. The Vanguard Group was a mercenary syndicate composed of disgraced former special forces operators. They didn't care about law or politics; they specialized in extrajudicial eliminations.

"Who is leading them?" I asked.

"Marcus Kane."

A heavy silence filled the room. Marcus Kane was my former lieutenant. The man who had tried to take over my territory nineteen years ago—the reason I had to fake my death and go into deep hiding in the first place.

"So," I said, a cold, bitter smile forming on my lips. "Marcus is still alive."

"He thinks you're dead, Boss. Arthur Cole hired him believing you were just some wealthy rogue operative taking revenge for his daughter. If Marcus realizes you are back..."

"He won't have time to realize it," I cut in. "Where is Arthur Cole right now?"

"He’s at his estate in Long Island. He’s gathered Senator Hale, Thomas Whitmore, and Marcus Kane. They’re locking down their assets and planning a preemptive strike on this hospital."

"They think they're hunters," I said, walking over to an antique trunk in the corner of the suite. I unlocked it using a biometric scanner hidden inside a wooden carving.

Inside lay two custom-fitted black combat pistols, a tactical belt, and a matte-black mask—the identical equipment I had buried nineteen years ago.

"Boss..." Leo gasped. "You haven't worn the mask since '07."

"They touched my daughter, Leo," I said, strapping the holster to my chest. "Tonight, the East Coast remembers why they were afraid of the dark."
