Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Will

By midnight, the grand mansion was as silent as a tomb. The catering staff had fled, the lights were dimmed, and the half-empty champagne glasses sat melting on silver trays.
In the massive, leather-bound library upstairs, Elena sat on the edge of a velvet sofa, holding a sleeping Mia tightly against her chest. She was terrified. She expected the police, a lawsuit, or worse.
Instead, Marcus Harrington stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the dark, rainy night. A heavy, old leather briefcase sat open on his mahogany desk. Inside lay a document that had been sealed for four years—the final will and testament of Arthur Harrington, Marcus’s late adoptive father.
Vivian burst into the room, slamming the double doors behind her. She had stripped off her diamonds, her face distorted with rage. "Marcus! What is the meaning of this madness? You humiliated me in front of the entire high society! You ended our engagement party for a kitchen maid and her brat!"
Marcus didn't turn around. "I suggest you watch your mouth, Vivian. You are speaking about my family."
Vivian let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "Family? Are you losing your mind? Your father died four years ago, and you have no siblings! You are the sole heir to Harrington Enterprises!"
"I was never the sole heir," Marcus said quietly, turning around to face her. His eyes were dead and cold. "My father had a biological child. A daughter he had out of wedlock with a woman he truly loved. A woman named Clara Vasquez."
Elena gasped, dropping the stuffed rabbit onto the floor. "No... no, that's impossible. Clara was my older sister. She died in a hit-and-run four years ago... right around the time your father passed."
Marcus walked over to the desk and picked up a photograph from the briefcase. He walked over to Elena and handed it to her. It was a picture of a beautiful woman with the exact same amber eyes as Elena, standing next to an older, wealthy-looking gentleman. They were both smiling, holding a brand-new, two-eyed grey stuffed rabbit.
"My father spent the last years of his life searching for Clara," Marcus explained, his voice thick with unexpressed grief. "He found her just before he died, but she refused his money. She wanted nothing to do with the Harrington name. When she died in that accident, my father fell into a depression and followed her to the grave weeks later. But before he died, he changed his will."
Marcus looked down at the sleeping Mia. "My father left 60% of Harrington Enterprises, the estate, and all offshore accounts to Clara Vasquez and her bloodline. If Clara was dead, it was supposed to go to her child. But we couldn't find the child. The records were wiped clean. I thought... I thought my father's true heir was gone forever."
Vivian’s face drained of color. She looked at Elena, then at Mia, her brain scrambling to process the numbers. Sixty percent of Harrington Enterprises was worth over four billion dollars.
"This is a lie!" Vivian shrieked, lunging toward the desk to grab the paperwork. "It’s a fake! Marcus, you built this company! You can't just hand it over to a maid's bastard child! We are supposed to get married next month! My family invested millions into your shipping docks!"
"Your family invested in my success because you wanted a piece of the crown," Marcus said fiercely, stepping between Vivian and the paperwork. "But the crown doesn't belong to me. It belongs to Mia. And you... you just kicked her and called her dirt on the floor of her own house."
Elena was shaking violently. "Mr. Harrington... I don't want your money. I just want to raise my daughter in peace. We don't belong here."

"You do belong here, Elena," Marcus said, his voice softening as he looked at his adoptive niece. "For four years, I have been living a lie, thinking I was the king of this castle. But tonight, the truth came out. Tomorrow morning, the lawyers will be here to transfer the assets."
Vivian backed away, a venomous look spreading across her beautiful features. "You think it’s that simple, Marcus? You think the board of directors will let a three-year-old child run a mega-corporation? You think my family will just sit back and let our engagement be broken over a maid?" She pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "If you do this, Marcus, I will ruin you. I will reveal to the media that Harrington Enterprises has been operating under a fraudulent CEO for four years. The stock will plunge to zero by sunrise."
