Chapter 4 - The War for the Crown

The remote cabin on the coast of Maine was supposed to be a safe haven, but it felt like a golden cage. Marcus sat in front of a bank of laptops, his face haggard and covered in stubble. The media had turned him into a monster overnight.

Vivian had spun a masterful web of lies. She appeared on national television in a black mourning dress, tears pooling in her eyes as she claimed Marcus had suffered a mental breakdown due to the stress of the business, burned his own estate, and kidnapped a maid and her child. The Callaway family had used their immense political leverage to freeze all of Marcus's personal bank accounts.

"They've locked me out," Marcus muttered, rubbing his eyes. "I can't access a single dollar. The board voted this morning to instate Vivian as temporary CEO until I am apprehended."

Elena walked into the room, holding a cup of hot tea she had made from the cabin’s pantry. She set it down next to him. "Marcus... you need to give them what they want. Give them the company. It’s not worth your life. It’s not worth Mia’s."

Marcus looked up at her, his expression fierce. "If I give them the company, Elena, they will kill us. Vivian knows the truth now. She knows that as long as Mia is alive, her claim to the Harrington empire is illegal. She won't stop until Mia is eliminated."

Before Elena could reply, the cabin’s landline phone rang. It was an unlisted number. Marcus picked it up, putting it on speaker.

"Hello, Marcus," Vivian’s voice purred through the line, dripping with arrogance. "I hope you like the cold weather up north. The police are tracking your location as we speak. You have exactly twelve hours before they raid that little cabin."

"You're a monster, Vivian," Marcus growled. "I have the video of you setting the fire. The police have it."

Vivian laughed, a chilling, mocking sound. "Oh, Marcus. You are so naive. Who do you think owns the Chief of Police? My father bought him his house in the Hamptons. That video evidence has already 'mysteriously disappeared' from the police database. To the world, you are a unhinged criminal, and I am the grieving fiancée trying to save your company."

"What do you want?" Marcus demanded.

"I want a signed confession," Vivian said sharply. "You will sign a document stating that the will of Arthur Harrington was a forgery created by you and Elena Vasquez to steal the company. You will sign over all rights to me. Do that, and I will allow you and the maid to flee the country. Refuse... and the police will be forced to use lethal force during the raid tonight. Accidents happen in the dark, Marcus. Especially to little girls."

The line went dead.

Elena fell to her knees, sobbing violently. "No... please, no. Not my baby."

Marcus stood up, his jaw clenched, an icy resolve settling over him. He walked over to the closet and pulled out a heavy, locked metal case. He punched in a code, and the lid popped open, revealing an old satellite phone and an encrypted hard drive.

"Vivian thinks she won because she controls the local police and the media," Marcus said, his eyes flashing with the brilliance that had made him a self-made billionaire. "But she forgot one thing. I didn't build Harrington Enterprises on luck. I built it on leverage."

He dialed a number on the satellite phone. It rang three times before a deep, authoritative voice answered. "Harrington. I thought you were dead."

"Not yet, Senator," Marcus replied calmly. "Remember that offshore account in Switzerland we discussed two years ago? The one containing the financial records of the Callaway family's illegal weapon manufacturing deals?"

There was a long pause on the other end. "I remember."

"I'm sending you the encryption key now," Marcus said. "I need a federal task force, a media blackout override, and an arrest warrant for Vivian Callaway. You have six hours before the local police get here. Do we have a deal?"
