Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Blood and Billions

The rain slammed against the tinted windows of Alexander’s armored Maybach. Inside, the silence was suffocating. Clara sat in the middle of the leather backseat, looking small and fragile between the towering figure of Alexander and the grim-faced driver, Marcus.

“Who was that lady?” Clara’s voice was barely a squeak. “Did she really say she’s my mommy?”

Alexander looked out the window, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He had bypassed the police, bypassed the screaming principal, and escorted Clara directly to his car under the protection of his own security detail. The woman from the gym had been detained by school security, but Alexander knew that wouldn't hold her for long.

Not when she was Victoria Sterling.

“She is not your mother, Clara,” Alexander said, his voice quiet but dripping with a cold fury. “Not in any way that matters.”

“But she knew my name. And she looked like…” Clara choked back a sob, pulling her knees to her chest. “She looked like the picture.”

Alexander closed his eyes, inhaling deeply. When he opened them, the cold executive was gone, replaced by a man carrying a heavy, tragic truth. “Ten years ago, Clara, I had a brother. His name was Julian. He was a brilliant artist, but he was naive. He fell in love with Victoria. They had a child—a beautiful baby girl with eyes just like Julian’s. Blue, like the sky before a storm.”

Clara touched her own eyes.

“But Victoria didn't want a family,” Alexander continued, his voice darkening. “She wanted the Reeves fortune. When Julian refused to hand over his shares of our family’s company, she did something unspeakable. She staged a kidnapping. She took the baby, demanded a fifty-million-dollar ransom, and when the drop went wrong… Julian was killed. The baby was reported dead, drowned in a river to cover Victoria’s escape.”

Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. “But… I’m here. I didn’t drown.”

“Because Victoria didn't throw you in the river,” Alexander said, looking at her with raw, protective devotion. “She dumped you at Saint Jude’s under a fake name, intending to come back for you when the heat died down and she could use you to claim Julian’s frozen estate. For six years, I believed my niece was dead. I believed my brother’s line was extinct.”

He reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. “Until tonight. I received an anonymous tip that a child matching Julian’s DNA profile was living at Saint Jude’s. I came to that dance to find you, Clara. I didn't expect to find you being tormented by those monsters. And I certainly didn't expect Victoria to track you down so quickly.”

Suddenly, Marcus slammed on the brakes. The heavy Maybach skidded on the wet asphalt.

Ahead of them, blocking the narrow, tree-lined road leading to Alexander’s estate, were three black SUVs. Their high beams cut through the torrential rain, blinding them.

“Sir, we’ve got a blockade,” Marcus warned, his hand moving to the holster under his jacket. “They’re not local police.”

The doors of the SUVs opened, and men in tactical gear stepped out, holding assault rifles. In the center of the headlights stood Victoria Sterling, her wet hair clinging to her face, a mocking smile playing on her lips. She held a megaphone to her mouth.

“Alexander!” her voice echoed through the storm. “Hand over the girl. The courts have already signed the emergency custody order. If you don't open that door, my men will open it for you. She is a Sterling, and she belongs to me!”
