Chapter 9 - The Final ReckoningThe door to the office flew backward, slamming hard against the drywall with a thunderous bang.

“Marissa!”

Viktor’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding, cutting through the tense silence of the room like a lightning bolt.

Viktor stood in the doorway, his sleeves rolled up, his eyes instantly locking onto Antoine standing over Marissa’s desk with his hand buried inside his utility jacket.

In a fraction of a second, Viktor crossed the room with predatory speed. He didn't hesitate, didn't negotiate, and didn't ask questions.

Before Antoine could pull whatever weapon or device was hidden inside his jacket, Viktor slammed his shoulder directly into Antoine’s chest, sending the former chef flying backward across the small office.

Antoine crashed hard against a metal filing cabinet, sending binders, folders, and office supplies scattering across the floor. The heavy metal toolbox slipped from his grip, clattering loudly against the tiles.

“Security!” Viktor roared, standing over Antoine, pinning him against the wall with one heavy forearm pressed firmly against his collarbone. “Code red in the back office! Call the precinct—tell them my bail-jumping ex-chef just violated his restraining order!”

Within seconds, two corporate security guards—backed by Arthur Sterling himself, who had been walking the hallway—rushed into the room.

“Hold him,” Arthur commanded, leaning heavily on his cane as he surveyed the wreckage. He looked down at Antoine, who was gasping for air against the filing cabinet. “Well, well. Looks like the rats are trying to crawl back into the pantry before the exterminator finishes his work.”

Antoine glared up at Viktor, a bloody smirk on his lip. “You think you won, Vance? You think converting this place into a charity house makes you a saint? You don't know what’s tied to this basement. You’re playing with fire, and the people backing this property aren't going to let you walk away.”

“Let them come,” Viktor said coldly, his eyes burning with absolute, unyielding resolve. “I built this empire from the ground up, and I can tear every brick down if it means cleaning out the rot.”

The security guards yanked Antoine to his feet, forcefully dragging him out of the office toward the loading dock where Chicago police were already waiting.

The room fell silent once more, save for the faint, warm sound of jazz drifting in from the dining room.

Viktor turned around immediately, his aggressive corporate predator persona instantly vanishing, replaced by deep, genuine concern. He stepped up to Marissa, his hands hovering gently near her shoulders.

“Are you hurt?” Viktor asked, his voice softening. “Did he touch you?”

Marissa exhaled a shaky breath, letting out the tension she had been holding in her chest. She shook her head, offering a small, exhausted smile. “I’m okay, Viktor. Really. Just... startled.”

Viktor let out a long breath, running a hand through his hair. “I shouldn't have left you alone in here. I was signing paperwork with the city council. From now on, you have a security detail wherever you go in this building.”

“I’m the managing director of a community kitchen, Viktor, not the President of the United States,” she chuckled softly, though her eyes thanked him.

“Close enough,” Viktor murmured.

He looked down at the desk, where her unfinished contract was still lying beside the laptop. He picked up the heavy silver pen, handed it directly to her, and stood close enough that she could feel the steady warmth of his presence.

“Well,” Viktor said quietly, his eyes locking onto hers. “Shall we finish what we started at sunrise?”

Marissa looked down at the document. The bold letters at the top read: The Vance-Vale Community Trust: Executive Operating Charter.

She didn't hesitate this time.

With a steady, resolute hand, Marissa Vale signed her name at the bottom of the page, sealing a new dawn for the Sterling Room, for the community, and for her son.
