Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the SterlingsThree months later, the spring sun broke over Manhattan, washing the city in brilliant, unbroken gold.

The trial of Victoria Vance was swift, closed-door, and absolute. With federal wiretaps, corporate audit trails, and ballistic forensics linking her directly to the attempted assassination in Central Park and the break-in at the penthouse, she joined her husband in maximum-security federal confinement for the rest of her natural life.

At the Central Park West penthouse, however, the heavy steel security shutters were wide open, letting the warm morning breeze flood every corner of the grand estate.

Lily stood on the expansive private balcony overlooking the very stretch of Central Park where her life had changed forever. She wasn't wearing rags anymore. She wore a tailored white linen dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, her amethyst-hazel eyes bright, clear, and utterly fearless.

Behind her, the glass doors slid open, and Ethan stepped out holding two glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice. He handed one to her, leaning against the balcony railing beside her.

"You've been staring at that exact patch of trees for twenty minutes," Ethan noted with a warm, knowing smile. "Thinking about the cold?"

"No," Lily replied softly, taking a sip of the juice. "I was thinking about how weird it is that a single phone call can change the entire universe."

Julian wheeled himself out onto the balcony, moving with far more speed and confidence now that his physical therapy was nearly complete. "Hey, street rat," Julian grinned, nudging her shoulder with his. "Dad and I checked your midterm scores. You beat me by four points in advanced calculus. Remind me never to challenge a homeless genius to a math duel again."

Lily laughed, a bright, musical sound that echoed off the glass towers of Manhattan. "You just need to study harder, Julian. Being a Sterling means you don't get to slack off."

Ethan looked between the two children—his son, who had learned how to fight for survival, and his niece, who had finally found a place where she didn't have to fight anymore. He wrapped an arm around both of them, drawing them close against the warm morning wind.

"Come on," Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute, unbreakable pride. "Let's go down to the park. The city is waiting for us."

As the three of them walked back inside, leaving the balcony bathed in the brilliant, unobstructed light of a new dawn, the old world of shadows, hunger, and fear faded away completely.
