Chapter 9 - The Final TrapLily’s blood ran ice-cold.

She didn't run. She didn't scream for Ethan. Three years on the streets had taught her that when a predator enters your den, crying out only tells them where to strike first.

Victoria Vance turned slowly toward the master bedroom corridor where Ethan and Julian were sleeping. Her boots clicked rhythmically against the marble floor as she raised the weapon, stepping past the library entrance where Lily was hidden.

Lily’s eyes scanned the dark salon in a frantic sweep for a weapon. Nothing. Just crystal vases, expensive art books, and a decorative antique brass fireplace poker resting beside the marble hearth ten feet away.

Ten feet across an open, uncarpeted floor. If her bare feet made even a whisper of a sound against the marble, Victoria would spin around and put a bullet through her chest before she could take a breath.

Victoria reached the threshold of Ethan's bedroom, her finger resting lightly on the trigger guard.

Now, Lily's survival instinct screamed.

Instead of going for the poker, Lily grabbed a heavy, crystal paperweight from the nearby side table and hurled it with every ounce of her strength toward the opposite end of the penthouse—smashing it directly into a towering decorative suit of armor standing by the foyer doors.

CRASH!

The iron gauntlet and helmet collapsed onto the marble floor with a deafening, thunderous clatter that shook the room.

Victoria whipped around, her weapon swinging toward the foyer, her eyes wide with shock. "Who's there?!" she hissed, lowering her stance.

That split-second distraction was all Lily needed.

She sprinted across the open marble floor like a phantom, diving behind the heavy marble pillar near the fireplace just as Victoria fired a blind shot into the darkness. The bullet punched a jagged hole through the mahogany paneling inches above Lily's head, raining splinters down on her hair.

"I know you're here, you little street rat!" Victoria snarled, her voice dripping with venom as she advanced toward the library partition. "Richard warned me about you. You ruined everything! If you hadn't picked up that phone in Central Park, none of this would have happened!"

Victoria stepped around the partition, her gun barrel leveled at the empty space where Lily had been sitting a second before.

Clack.

Before Victoria could pull the trigger, Lily swung the heavy brass fireplace poker with a vicious, two-handed arc, catching Victoria squarely across the wrist.

The pistol flew from Victoria's hand, skidding across the polished marble and plunging off the edge of the 78th-floor balcony into the winter night below.

Victoria screamed in pain, clutching her broken wrist, but lunged forward with her free hand, grabbing Lily by the collar of her velvet dress and slamming her against the glass window. The reinforced glass held, but the impact knocked the wind entirely out of Lily's lungs.

"Die, you little bitch!" Victoria hissed, her fingers wrapping around Lily's throat, squeezing hard as the cold, merciless grip of a desperate murderer took hold.

Lily clawed at Victoria's arms, her vision beginning to darken at the edges. The room spun. The amber lights blurred into streaks of red and gold.

You fall asleep in the cold... you don't always wake up, an old man's voice echoed in her mind from under a bridge three years ago.

No. She wasn't going back to the dark.

With a final, explosive surge of adrenaline, Lily drove her heel directly into Victoria's knee joint with bone-shattering force.

Victoria shrieked, collapsing instantly as her knee buckled backward.

Before Victoria could recover, heavy footsteps thundered down the master hallway.

"Victoria!" Ethan’s voice roared, echoing through the penthouse like the sound of an approaching avalanche.

Ethan burst into the salon, shirtless, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying fury. Behind him stood Julian, holding a heavy tactical flashlight, his eyes wide with shock.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Victoria by the collar of her cloak and flinging her away from Lily as if she weighed nothing at all. Victoria crashed hard against the marble floor, unconscious before her head even hit the stone.

Ethan dropped to his knees beside Lily, pulling her into his arms as she coughed violently, gasping for air.

"Lily! Lily, look at me. Are you okay?" Ethan's voice was shaking, the billionaire facade completely shattered, revealing a terrified father holding his world together.

May you like

Lily buried her face in Ethan's shoulder, gripping the fabric of his shirt just like she had gripped her old tattered coat in Central Park.

"I'm... I'm okay," she whispered, her voice raw. "I'm right here."
