Chapter 2 - The Flashbang and the FalloutThe kitchen instantly erupted into chaos.

Before Marcus and Rachel could process the flashing red and blue lights bouncing off the living room walls, a tactical flashbang canister came skittering across the hardwood floor from the hallway, landing with a sharp clatter right near the kitchen island.
BOOM.
A blinding white flash momentarily turned the room into daylight, accompanied by a deafening shockwave that rattled the glassware in the cabinets. Rachel screamed, stumbling backward and crashing hard into the pantry door, her hands flying up to cover her ears. Marcus leaped out of his chair with a curse, his legs buckling under the disorientation as he tripped over the dining table, sending papers and pens flying everywhere.
I had anticipated the tactical entry, bracing myself by pressing my back firmly against the refrigerator and shutting my eyes just before the detonation. Even so, the concussion rattled my teeth, and a fresh wave of pain flared around my broken rib. But I didn't fall. I kept my eyes open as the heavy-footed rush of armed officers flooded the kitchen.
"Down on the ground! Do it now! Down, down, down!"
Four heavily armored officers swarmed the space, their tactical gear sleek, their assault rifles raised and laser-sighted directly on my children. The air filled with the sharp scent of cordite and ozone.
Marcus, still dazed and blinking frantically against the lingering spots in his vision, found himself staring down the barrel of a submachine gun. A boot pressed hard into the back of his expensive jacket, slamming him face-first onto the linoleum floor right beside the spilled apples and my dried blood.
"I said hands behind your back! Don't move an inch or you'll be tased!" an officer barked, a plastic zip-tie cuff snapping tightly around Marcus’s wrists with a harsh ziip.
Rachel was already hyperventilating, her mascara running down her cheeks in jagged black streaks as two female officers pinned her arms behind her back against the quartz counter. "Get off me! Do you know who I am? This is my house! My mother attacked us! She’s crazy, she fell, she's making it all up!" she shrieked, thrashing wildly. Her voice was pure, unadulterated panic—the terrifying realization of a spoiled predator suddenly trapped in a cage.
An officer stepped forward, keeping a cautious eye on the room before lowering his weapon slightly as he recognized me leaning against the fridge. He pressed a hand to his comm-piece. "Command, this is Team Alpha. Suspects secured on scene. We have a civilian casualty, elderly female, appears to have significant trauma to the upper torso. Requesting paramedics inside immediately."
"I'm alright, officer," I managed to say, though my voice hitched as a sharp breath caught in my throat. "Just... my ribs. And my lip."
The officer’s expression softened instantly. He stepped closer, gently guiding me toward a cleared chair at the kitchen table while stepping over the mess of papers. "Take it easy, ma'am. You're safe now. We received your silent panic alert, and dispatch patched us through to the live cloud stream from your security system. We saw and heard everything."
From the floor, pinned beneath an officer's knee, Marcus’s head whipped around. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he stared up at the small black camera above the pantry door. The tiny LED light, which had been blinking a steady, innocent green all morning, suddenly felt like a blazing neon sign spelling out their doom.
"The... the camera?" Marcus choked out, spittle flecking his lips as the cold reality crashed down on him. "You recorded us? You recorded the whole thing?"
May you like
"Every single word, Marcus," I whispered, looking down at my son—the boy I had raised, the man who had traded his humanity for greed. "Every threat. Every shove. Every punch."
Rachel let out a long, shuddering sob, her knees finally giving out beneath her as the officers hoisted her upright. The handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists with a finality that echoed louder than any gunshot. They hadn't just lost their mother today; they had signed away their freedom, their inheritance, and any shred of dignity they thought they possessed.
