Chapter 8 - The Final TwistThe blood drained entirely from my face, leaving me dizzy and swaying on the porch as the warden’s words echoed endlessly in my ears.

Someone currently living under your very roof...
My mind raced backward through the years, through the endless demands, the quiet smirks, the way Rachel never stopped Marcus from hitting me, the way she pushed for the house arrangements, the way she insisted I move in "until I figured things out." Rachel hadn't just been an accomplice to greed; she had been the mastermind all along, pulling her biological brother’s strings from the shadows, executing a decades-long vendetta to reclaim the farm land she believed rightfully belonged to her real family line.
"Warden..." I whispered, my voice trembling with a cold, terrifying clarity. "Where is Rachel?"
"That’s the other reason I’m calling you, ma'am," the warden replied grimly. "When our guards went to transfer Rachel to her holding block following Marcus’s confession, her cell was completely empty. She never checked into the women's facility this morning. Using forged visitor credentials and an insider bribe, she walked right out of the intake bay three hours ago."
A sudden, sharp creak echoed from inside my cottage.
The front door—the heavy wooden door I was certain I had locked before stepping outside—slowly clicked open, swinging inward with a soft, ominous groan.
I froze, gripping my cane tightly as a familiar, chilling pair of footsteps clicked softly across my hardwood hallway.
"Looking for me, Mother?" Rachel’s voice drifted out from the doorway, sweet as poison, cold as ice.
She stepped out onto the sunlit porch, wearing a stolen guard’s jacket, her eyes wide and unhinged, holding a heavy silver revolver she had somehow managed to smuggle out of the precinct armory. The morning light bounced off the barrel, casting a blinding glint right across my face.
"You really thought a little pantry camera was going to stop us?" Rachel smiled, her face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated madness. "We're the Henderson bloodline, Mom. We always get what's ours—even if we have to take it over your dead body."

The phone slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the wooden boards while the warden’s urgent voice echoed faintly from the speaker on the floor: “Mrs. Henderson! Mrs. Henderson, are you there?! Security is en route! Stay back!”
Rachel raised the heavy revolver, her finger tightening around the trigger as she stepped closer. But as she looked into my eyes, she didn't see fear, panic, or weakness. She saw a mother who was finally done running, ready to face the absolute end of the nightmare once and for all.
