Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Audit — "The $4 Million Loan My Father Begged Me to Forgive!"

The dining room fell into a silence so absolute you could hear the soft, rhythmic clicking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.
My mother’s hand remained frozen on the doorframe. My cousin Leah stopped chewing, her mouth slightly open, a forkful of prime rib hovering mid-air. My father looked from the tall, imposing executive to me, his jaw tightening as if he were trying to comprehend a foreign language.
"Evelyn?" my father finally choked out, his voice cracking. "What is this man talking about? Director? You... you work at the downtown bookstore."
"I own the bookstore, Dad," I said, set down my mug, and stood up from the table. "I also own the historical building it sits in. And the entire commercial block surrounding it."
"No," Vivien laughed, though the sound was high, sharp, and laced with a sudden, rising panic. "No, that's impossible. You're a retail clerk, Evelyn! You’ve been living on a twenty-thousand-dollar salary for five years! You wear the same faded green coat every winter! You're making a scene in front of my corporate liaison!"
I reached into the pocket of my plain, oversized coat—the one Aunt Martha had spent the last three hours whispering about—and pulled out a sleek, matte-black titanium card. It didn't have a brand name or a bank logo. It had only a small, engraved vaulted archway in the center and a single line of micro-text on the back.
The lead executive immediately stepped forward, took the card, and ran it through his handheld reader. The device chimed twice, a low, secure frequency, and displayed a bright blue confirmation code.

"We have verified the biometric handprint, Director," the executive said, turning the tablet toward me. "The unauthorized transfer originated from an account connected to Vance & Associates—specifically, the executive transition fund allocated for the incoming CEO's discretionary use."
I looked at my sister, whose face had gone from a triumphant flush to a terrifying shade of gray.
"Vivien," I said, my voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of anger. "Did you really think the transition fund was a signing bonus? Did you think a six-hundred-thousand-dollar salary came with a four-million-dollar blank check?"
"Evelyn, stop this!" my mother screamed, her voice cracking as she rushed toward the table, her hands trembling. "You're embarrassing your sister! This is her night! She worked so hard to get this position! You’ve always been jealous of her achievements!"
"She didn't achieve anything, Mother," I said, pointing a finger at the leather folder containing the job applications she had tried to force on me.

"My father’s friends didn't just build a ladder for Vivien," I continued, looking directly at the man who had spent his life calling me 'the bare minimum.' "They used my father’s retirement pension as collateral to secure her initial interviews at Vance. And when that wasn't enough to buy her way into the boardroom, she signed a private credit guarantee with a secondary lender—using this family home as the primary asset lock."

My father stood up so fast his chair tipped backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor. "What? Vivien... is this true? The house? We paid off the mortgage ten years ago!"
Vivien didn't answer. She was staring at the black titanium card in my hand, her lips trembling, her hands clutching her black velvet skirt as if she were trying to hold herself together.
